Panthers top Charlevoix, 61-53

CHARLEVOIX — Frankfort won the battle at the free-throw line, and the fourth quarter, and pulled away for a 61-53 victory over Charlevoix on Tuesday night.

The visiting Panthers trailed heading into the final period before Brenna Banktson scored nine of her game-high 22 points to propel the Panthers.

"It was a real good game," Charlevoix coach Keith Haske said. "Banktson was the difference. She made plays down the stretch."

Nicole Marshall added 14 points for Frankfort, which hit 25 of its 36 free-throw attempts while Charlevoix connected on 10 of 18.

Lori Zimmerman had 13 points and Robyn Petzak 11 for Charlevoix.

TC Central 50
Grandville 43

Traverse City Central recovered from an 11-point halftime deficit to top Grandville, 50-43.

The Trojans outscored Grandville, 33-15 in the second half.

"I think the kids just settled down a little bit (in the second half)," Trojan coach Larry Truelove said.

"I told them that if we could just make some stops and get some baskets, I thought we could creep back into it, and that's just what we did."

Dori Lansbach tallied 16 points, four assists and four steals to pace Central.

Lynden Baesch added 14 points, four steals and four assists while Lindsay Smith led in rebounds with four.

Lindsey Karpowicz scored a game-high 18 points for Grandville.

Grandville won the JV game, 41-30.

Meredity Aja paced the Trojans with eight points.

Benzie Central 39
St. Ignace 37

Benzie Central edged St. Ignace 39-37 at the Petoskey Invitational and will play in the tourney championship on Thursday.

Jolene Jeske led Benzie Central with nine points and Samantha Kofiboski scored seven.

Maria Blazejewski and Elizabeth Merrill had 12 rebounds and six points each for the Huskies.

Elk Rapids 62
Mancelona 28

Elk Rapids rolled past Mancelona, 62-28.

Kasey Anderson netted 23 points for the Elks and Jocylen Fox scored 14.

Mancelona was led by Katie Alexander with nine points.

Boyne City 61
Suttons Bay 18

Three players scored in double digits for Boyne City as the Ramblers bounced Suttons Bay, 61-18.

Holly Stanek led Boyne with 17 points. Jessica Knysz added 16 and Megan Jenkins scored 11.

Shelby Mitting chipped in with six points for the Ramblers.

Crystal Dittrich paced Suttons Bay with nine rebounds and seven points.

Kelsey Wick and Maggie Walters added four points each.

Mason Co. Central 57
Manistee 34

Krystle Dunblazer dropped in 14 points to lead Mason County Central in a 57-34 victory over Manistee.

Erin Welsh paced Manistee with seven points and Kaylie Toelle collected eight rebounds.

Mesick 36
Forest Area 27

Kaylee Flaugher had 10 rebounds and eight points to lead Mesick to a 36-27 win over Forest Area.

Erica Hamilton added eight rebounds and six points. Nicole Hindman, Carrissa Squier and Samantha Furze were credited as defensive standouts.

Chelsea Snyder led Forest Area with 12 points.

Baldwin 32
Northport 25

Baldwin spoiled Northport's season debut with a 32-25 victory.

Lauren Browning had 12 points to lead Northport.

GOLF

TC Central second at Alpena Invitational

Traverse City Central was second overall and first in the Big North portion at the Alpena Invitational.

Flushing was the overall champion with a 313, three shots better than the Trojans. Cadillac was third (317), Bay City Western fourth (317) and TC West fifth (319).

The Trojans were paced by Brent Stevens, who fired a 77. He was followed by Ben Jones with a 78, Matt Gauthier with a 79 and Clay Lesley with an 82.

Central took over the lead in the Big North. The Trojans will host the third league tournament Friday at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.

Brian Kelly tied for fourth overall for TC West with a 77. Alex Ogden added a 79 for the Titans.

St. Francis edges Harbor at Lake Michigan meet

Traverse City St. Francis had three scores in the 70s to edge Harbor Springs, 311-315, in a Lake Michigan match at The Moor.

Charlevoix was third with a 337 followed by Grayling (343), Elk Rapids (352), Kalkaska (353), Boyne City (377) and East Jordan (394).

Andrew Walukonis led the Glads with a 76, tied for second overall. Tony and Blane Casciano added 77s and Tom Brick an 81.

Harbor Springs' Tyler Parkin was medalist with a 75. Teddy Griffin added a 76 while Kyle Anderson and Jordan Lechowicz shot 82s.

Kris Bartling had an 80 and J.D. Speigl an 82 for Charlevoix.

Suttons Bay wins NWC preseason tourney

Suttons Bay had all six of its golfers in the top 10 to win the Northwest Conference preseason golf tournament at Interlochen.

The Norse finished with a 302. Kingsley was second with a 383, followed by Mesick (408), Manton (425) and Frankfort (476).

Suttons Bay's Nate Kelly was medalist with a 1-under 70. He was followed by Drew Palmer (75), David Tropf (78) and Chris Wanroy (79).

Not counting for the Norse, but in the top 10 were Charlie Olson (80) and Josh Schaub (85).

Also in the top 10 were Kingsley's Miles Guy (81), Manton's Mitch Norman (88) and Mesick's Andrew Gaylord (94) and Dan Casselman (95).

Suttons Bay hosts a league jamboree at The Leelanau Club next Wednesday.

Benzie Central 162
Mason Co. Central 169

Benzie Central carded a 162 to overpower Mason County Central with 169 in a 9-hole match.

Brady Cole carded a team-low 38 for Benzie Central.

Sean Maier finished with 39 followed by Paul Norman 40 and Brandon Evans 45.

Mason County Central's Alex Dotey earned medalist honors with a 36.

Central JVs win, TC West finishes 6th

Shane Darrow shot an 80 to pace the Traverse City Central JV to a title in the 10-team Alpena Invitational.

The Trojans finished with a 332.

Tim Grimm had an 82, Billy Korreck 84 and Alex Homant 86 for Central.

West shot a 370 to place sixth. The Titans were led by Ian Davis at 86, Brian Clishe at 90 and John Cannon and Leland Yanick at 97.

Leland 2
Glen Lake 1

First-half goals by Matt Larsen and Brian Zaryczny powered Leland to a 2-1 victory over Glen Lake.

Chris Burda had the assist on Zaryczny's tally. Tyler Kenney and Ben Fellows split the goalkeeping duties for the Comets (5-0).

Elk Rapids 3
Petoskey 0

Ian Sliger had a goal and an assist as Elk Rapids improved to 2-1 with an impressive 3-0 win at Petoskey.

Garrett Gribi and Andy Caperton also tallied for the Elks. Mike Greiner and Ryan Agruda also picked up assists in the game.

Dan Werth registered his second shutout in three games. The Elks outshot Petoskey 10-6.

TENNIS

TC West JV 8
Alpena JV 0

The TC West JV didn't lose a set in blanking the Alpena JV, 8-0.

Winning in singles for West were Aria Jelinek at No. 1 (7-5, 6-1), Brooke Rodes at No. 2 (6-0, 6-1), Heather Durham at No. 3 (6-3, 6-0) and Christina Olson at No. 4 (6-1, 6-0).

Doubles winners were Morgan Johnson/Ellen Walczak at No. 1 (6-1, 6-1), Jamie Schaub/Danika Baker at No. 2 (6-3, 6-2), Alison Christopherson/Tiana Hayes at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0) and Taylor Dow/Aly Jarosz at No. 4 (6-1, 6-1).

Winning exhibitions were Amy Winton (6-1) and Bethany Cunningham/Kelsey Schmitt (8-3).
