Comets keep crown

TC West sweeps cross country dual with Howell

LELAND — The Leland soccer coach may share a surname with the tournament, but he's not about to share the trophy.

Leland won its fifth straight Boynton Invitational title on Saturday with a 3-2 victory over Manistee. Rob Boynton has been the head soccer coach for each of those five seasons.

"Even though the tournament isn't named after me, it's already got my name engraved on it before the tournament even begins," Rob Boynton joked. "So the rule is, you better win it."

In the final, Tyler Kenney made eight saves to give the Comets the crown.

Leland took a 2-0 lead on goals by Eric Larsen and Jason Schlueter. Chris Roman assisted on Larsen's tally and Jordan Gibson on Schlueter's goal.

Roman added an unassisted goal later in the match.

Boynton, in addition to singling out Kenney in net, praised the play of defenders Alex Gulow and Adam Nedow. Boynton said several of Kenney's saves against Mansitee were of the spectacular variety.

Dalton Zawacki had both goals for Manistee, the final one coming with 1:05 to play.

Leland advanced with a 4-1 victory over Forest Area as Larsen scored twice. Adam Osiecki and Roman also scored goals with assists going to Chris Burda, Gibson and David O'Connor.

Manistee scored three unanswered goals to top Reed City 4-2 in the second match of the tournament.

Reed City won the consolation match with a 3-1 victory over Forest Area.
