08/26/2006RoundupCranbrook wins Kickoff ClassicNorthport soccer posts a pair of shutout victoriesTRAVERSE CITY Cranbrook successfully defended its title in the eight-team Traverse City Kickoff Classic on Friday. Cranbrook, ranked No. 1 in the Division 3 tennis poll, won three flights en route to finishing with 18 points. Traverse City Central, No 8 in Division 1, was second with 16 points. Grosse Pointe South, No. 3 in Division 1, placed third with 15 points while Detroit Country Day, No. 1 in Division 4, took fourth with 13 points. The Yellowjackets were followed by Holland West Ottawa (12), Brighton (8) and Grand Rapids Christian (7) and Jenison (7). "This is the highest level tournament we've had here," Central coach Larry Nykerk. The tournament also featured the state's No. 1 player Cranbrook's Shannon Mathews, who won the No. 1 singles flight. Mathews is rated fourth in the Midwest. For Central, the highlight of the day was finishing ahead of Grosse Pointe South. The Trojans were powered by their doubles teams. Three won flight championships. At No. 1 doubles, Ali Gribi and Laura Spencer defeated Brighton (6-0, 6-4), Country Day (6-0, 6-7, 10-3) and Cranbrook (6-3, 6-1). At No. 2 doubles, Callee Newhouse and Sarah Malone topped Grand Rapids Christian (6-1, 6-1), Cranbrook (6-2, 6-2) and Grosse Pointe South (6-1, 7-5). At No. 3 doubles, Melissa Hughes and Kayla Casciano edged Cranbrook (4-6, 7-6, 10-8), Holland West Ottawa (3-6, 7-6, 10-4) and Grosse Pointe South (6-4, 4-6, 10-6). The No. 4 doubles team of Kim Campbell and Kara Dornbusch finished runner-up. They beat Jenison (6-0, 6-4) and Brighton (1-6, 6-2, 13-11) and lost in the final to Cranbrook (7-6, 7-5). Central also secured points in all four singles flights No. 1 Erin Chadwell, No. 2 Melissa Engel and No. 4 Emily Lelandais won one match each while No. 3 Katie Krueger claimed two matches. Central hosts the Up North tournament on Monday. soccer Northport wins pair of 5-0 decisions Northport racked up a pair of decisive wins in one day, knocking off Harbor Light and Grand Marais by identical 5-0 scores. Nathan Sherrer scored a goal and had two assists in the win over Harbor Light, with single goals coming from Basil Stowe, Cody Brown, Ryan Blessing and Drew Mitchell. Brown also had an assist. Mitchell played a half in goal and Jason Tropf the other half to split the shutout. Brown notched a pair of goals against Grand Marais, and Blessing, Stowe and Christian Gochez each had goals. Evan Morgan, Stowe and Sherrer had assists, and Brown added two more. Jessie Bressette and Mitchell split time in goal for the Wildcats (2-1), who travel to Buckley on Monday to open Cherryland Conference action. Ogemaw Heights 4 Grayling fell to 0-2 with a 4-2 setback to Ogemaw Heights. Tony Florizal notched a goal and an assist for the Vikings. Colin Hamlin netted the other goal.
