08/26/2006RoundupRayders open with winCHARLEVOIX Charlevoix picked off seven passes to key a 40-13 win over St. Ignace in a season-opening football game Friday night. Darron Munson had three interceptions for the Rayders. Chris Waha had two. Waha threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. Dan Swenor caught a 31-yard pass for a TD and scored another on a 80-yard run. Kyle Jones led the Rayders in tackles with eight. Elk Rapids 28 Elk Rapids opened its season with a new coach, a renovated field, and a 28-6 victory over Mancelona. The Elks scored on their opening drive, a 1-yard run by Levi Martin. Martin scored again on a 2-yard run and had a 20-yard touchdown pass to Matt Lee. Tyler Smith added another TD for the Elks on a 12-yard run. Bellaire 42 Bellaire accumulated 374 yards on the ground to key a 42-20 Ski Valley Conference win over Pellston. Ryan Hebden tossed for another 59 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown to Brad Guy and an 8-yarder to Mike McClary. Hebden also scored from 3 yards and Guy had a 23-yard TD run. Rob Fischer added a 41-yard TD run and Ian Hoalt scored from 5 yards out. Fischer finished with 14 carries for 148 yards. Jared Rames added 53 yards and Chris Bueby 52. Dakota Jones led the Eagle defense with 11 tackles and Jordan Nevarez 10. Nevarez also connected on all six PATs for Bellaire. Justin Litzner went 12-for-22 passing for 122 yards and two touchdowns to lead Pellston. Litzner connected with Chris Gillett on passes of 37 and 13 yards for touchdowns. Litzner also scored on a 12-yard run and finished with 69 yards on 15 carries. Flint Kearsley 20 Shane Kwapis scored Gaylord's lone touchdown in a 20-7 loss to Flint Kearsley. No further details were available. Grayling 27 Jeff Bancroft ran for three touchdowns to lead Grayling over Roscommon, 27-24. Bancroft scored on runs of 18, 6 and 3 yards. Isaac VanNuck also scored for the Vikings on a 35-yard interception return. Bancroft finished with 70 yards rushing and was 9-for-11 passing for 85 yards. Ryan Cooper added 135 yards on 31 carries. Ludington 12 Ludington blanked Manistee 12-0 in its season opener. Reid Vorheis paced Manistee with 87 yards on 13 carries while Jason Dontz added 42 yards on 11 carries. Eric Bigalke had 8 tackles and a fumble recovery to lead the defense. Frankfort 28 Frankfort stopped a two-point conversion attempt to edge Flint Northwestern, 28-26. Northwestern scored on the opening kickoff, but the next three touchdowns were scored by the Panthers: Wade Luxford (1 yard), Cory Lietaert (3 yards), and Scott Demerly (14 yards). Frankfort took a 20-14 lead into halftime after Northwestern scored on another 50-yard run. Northwestern tied the score in the fourth quarter on a 60-yard interception return. The Panthers went ahead on a fake punt, resulting in a 60-yard TD run by Lietaert. Luxford connected with Demerly on the conversion to give Frankfort a 28-20 lead. Northwestern put another touchdown on the board with a 55-yard pass, but its attempt to tie the game with a two-point conversion was stopped. Frankfort pulled off the win despite turning over the ball five times in the contest. Demerly led Frankfort with 168 yards rushing on 19 carries while Lietaert added 151 yards on 22. Banktson led defensively with 18 tackles. Cadillac 13 Kyle McDonald had an interception in the end zone to secure a 13-12 Cadillac win over Bay City John Glenn. Derrick Liebler scored on a 1-yard run and Ryan Combs scored from 40 yards for the Vikings. Ryan Combs complied 73 yards on 11 carries to lead Cadillac and Kyle Hinkle was 9-for-18 passing for 85 yards. McDonald and Matt Kanitz registered nine tackles each and Andy Fuller had eight to lead the defense. Glen Lake 42 Quarterback Jason Kemp ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 77 yards and another score as Glen Lake opened its season with a 42-6 win over East Jordan. The Lakers scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to open a 28-0 lead at half. Kemp scored on runs of 7 and 2 yards. He also connected with Ryan Dyksterhouse on a 27-yard touchdown. Kemp kicked four extra points and passed to Matt Lichty for two points. Weston Buchan blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone to ignite the Lakers' second quarter barrage. Colby Thoreson and Isaac Florip tallied on 5-yard runs. Lichty finished with 4 receptions for 41 yards. Defensively, Pat Deering was in on 13 tackles and Buchan 12. Buchan also intercepted a pass. Suttons Bay 13 Anthony Stewart scored on a 4th-and-goal from the two and Matt Pasch kicked the extra point to give Suttons Bay a 13-12 win over Benzie Central in overtime. Benzie had the ball first in overtime and on 4th-and-14 quarterback Dan Loney connected with Ben Nugent for the go-ahead score. The Huskies were penalized for excessive celebrating and then misfired from the 18 on the two-point conversion. Suttons Bay then punched it in on fourth down to tie the game. Pasch, who had a missed an extra point earlier in the game, converted for the win. "That was a heartstopper," Suttons Bay coach Joe Trudeau said. It was Suttons Bay's seventh consecutive season-opening win. The Norsemen struck first, scoring on a 2-yard run by Andrew Bumgardner in the second quarter. Benzie, however, retaliated as Loney scampered in from 13 yards to make it 6-all at half. It stayed that way until overtime. Jeff Ruthkowski completed 5 of 9 passes for 57 yards for the Norsemen. Collin Korson, Pasch, Bumgardner and Ray Freund all has six tackles. Mesick 30 Josh Wright rushed for 207 yards and three touchdowns as Mesick snapped an 18-game losing streak with a 30-8 win over Manistee Catholic. It was Jason Morrow's head coaching debut for the Bulldogs. Brandon Szegda also scored for Mesick. Quarterback Tommy Nakhozanh completed 2 of 3 passes for 89 yards. He also intercepted a pass. Ben Peltier added 89 yards on the ground. Bo Buss scored on a run for Manistee Catholic. Kalkaska 14 Corey Wilson rushed for 154 yards and a touchdown as Kalkaska beat Pine River 14-0 in a season-opening game. Ryan Leitow added 85 yards on the ground. Wilson scored on a 3-yard run in the first quarter, Leitow on a 2-yard run in the second quarter. Leitow kicked both extra points. Tim Dixon led the Blazers defensively with 12 tackles. Paul Kalinowski added eight and Alex Swoverland six. Swoverland had two interceptions. Gaylord SM 28 Two years ago, the results were quite different. When this year's St. Mary and Onaway seniors were sophomores, the JV result was a 35-0 victory in favor of the Cardinals. Gaylord St. Mary prevailed this time, 28-7. "We played an awesome game against a very good team," said Snowbirds coach Rod Bragg. "It was a game I really didn't expect to win. We played an outstanding game. Our offensive line did a terrific job of controlling the line." Rob DeLong ran for two touchdowns and had an interception to lead St. Mary. Onaway scored first on a Tim Garms 45-yard pass to T.J. Bentley for a 7-0 lead, but it was the only Cardinal score. DeLong responded with a 35-yard option run and a 45-yarder on consecutive drives for touchdowns for a 14-7 halftime advantage. Bryan Cook caught a 19-yard TD pass from DeLong early in the fourth quarter and Joel Kippe capped off the win with a 52-yard interception return with two minutes remaining. Andy Borowiak was 4-for-4 on extra points.
