Lake Leelanau St. Mary's sweeps softball twinbill

MANISTEE — Lake Leelanau St. Mary's opened its softball season by scoring double digits twice to sweep Manistee Catholic, 10-0 and 13-5.

Samantha Garthe allowed 3 hits and struck out 7 in the five-inning opener.

Haley Korson had 4 hits, including a double, and scored 3 runs for the Eagles. Susan Herman, Krystal Lingaur and Sarah Schaub had two hits.

Mary Lingaur had 3 hits and scored twice in the second game. Herman, winning pitcher Emily Mugerian and Anne Kuznicki (double) each added 2 hits.

Glen Lake 13 16
Benzie Central 3 6

Glen Lake rolled past Benzie Central, 13-3 and 16-6, to open its season 2-0.

Chelsea Klumpp and Jessica Odziana each had two hits and two RBIs in the first game.

Danielle Noonan earned the win on the mound with seven strikeouts.

Noonan was also the winning pitcher in the nightcap and had two hits and two RBIs on offense.

Sabrina Galla and Odziana had three hits each while Tara Novak tallied two hits and two RBIs for the Lakers.

Glen Lake will play host to Lake City on Thursday.

Leland 24
Forest Area 14

Sarah Allington had 3 hits, including a grand slam, as Leland defeated Forest Area 24-14.

Allington finished with 7 RBI's. LeeAnne Rice also had 3 hits and scored 4 runs.

Jessica Green pounded out 3 hits and Kaley Helsel 2 for Forest Area.

Ashley Maleski was the winning pitcher. She helped her own cause with 2 hits.

TC Central 18

Traverse City Central finished with 18 points at the eight-team Holly Invitational, finishing second behind Novi, which had 23.

Flight winners for Central were: Ryan White/Tom Hardin at No. 1 doubles and Callee Newhouse/Spence Powell at No. 2 doubles.

Central's Matt Haase and Andrew Aldrich took second place in the No. 4 doubles flight.

The Trojans had three first-place finishers in the consolation bracket, all in singles: Andrew Perkins, No. 1 ; Doug Burke, No. 3; and Carlos Buitrago, No. 4.

Ludington 0

Traverse City Central blanked Ludington 2-0 to earn its first soccer win of the season Saturday.

Danielle Reardon netted the first goal for the Trojans (1-1), with an assist from Kristin Lumley.

Lumley later added a goal of her own, assisted by Kacie Lumley.

Alyssa Budros was the winning goalie.

Ludington handed the Central junior varsity its first loss of the season, 2-1.

Amanda Striker scored the loan goal for the Trojans, assisted by Elise Kauffman.

Central's JV team fell to 1-1.

Cheboygan JV 0

Traverse City West JV Gold team was victorious in its season opener, 1-0 over the Cheboygan junior varsity.

Brittany Reinshuttle scored the game-winner with an assist by Leah Candy.

Sydney Johnson and Rachael Weber shared time in goal for the Titans.

West JV Gold will play again on Tuesday at Suttons Bay.
