Au Sable River cleanup begins

FROM STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

GRAYLING - Trash will come out of the Au Sable River today, and nature's woody debris will go in next week.
Volunteers will remove beer cans and other garbage today from the Au Sable River, part of a cleanup organized by the Anglers of the Au Sable. Next weekend, conservation workers will airlift woody debris into the trout stream.
The Huron Pines Resource Conservation and Development Area Countil is planning the tree drop.
Today's cleanup begins at 10 a.m. at the Gates Au Sable Lodge on Stephan Bridge Road east of Grayling. Most pre-registered volunteer spaces are full.
Call (989) 348-8462 for more information.
Volunteer teams will wade the entire upper river, including the North Branch, South Branch and mainstream of the Au Sable. Volunteers are still needed in Mio and McKinley to help cover the middle river beginning at 8 a.m. Call (989) 826-8500 for details.
The large woody debris placed in the water provides natural habitat for trout, prey fish, aquatic mammals and other stream life.
Early logging practices removed fallen trees and log jams from the river to more easily move trees to lumber mills.
The public is invited to watch the helicopter drop of whole trees and root wads at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Rayburn Tract near Grayling. Those who wish to attend must R.S.V.P. to (989) 348-9319, ext. 21.
