September 3, 2005East Bay residents to circulate petitionsFROM STAFF REPORTSTRAVERSE CITY - East Bay Township citizens will begin circulating petitions to recall township clerk Janice Gee and treasurer Debora Watson, alleging they failed to properly maintain the township's financial books resulting in mismanagement of public funds. Voters won't be asked to recall Gee for embezzling township funds, although she goes on trial Oct. 18 for seven felony counts of embezzling more than $19,000. The county election commission on Thursday eliminated the phrase "diverting township funds for personal use" from the petition language, finding the statement was "unclear." County Clerk Linda Coburn said the language must provide specific information that can be defended against, such as dates and dollar amounts. For the same reason, the commission rejected petition language to recall township parks commissioner Mike Simerson for allegedly using township equipment for "primarily" private use. Petition circulators have until Nov. 21 to collect 908 signatures for each official to force a recall election in February, Coburn said.
