October 29, 2005Suttons Bay captures districtByRecord-Eagle sports editor TRAVERSE CITY - Jesse Wright was in the right place Friday. The junior netted two goals to spark Suttons Bay to a 3-1 Division 4 district soccer championship win over Northport. It was Suttons Bay's second win over the Wildcats in a week and it gave the Norsemen their second district title in school history. "We played well," Wright said. "We came ready for it. We wanted it bad. We wanted it more. We had a lot of drive." The two teams split a pair of regular season games. Wright scored the game-winner in last Friday's 2-1 win over Northport that clinched the Cherryland Conference championship. The Norsemen (15-3-1) will now host Big Bay deNoc in a regional opener Tuesday. Suttons Bay has never won a regional game. "This is the year," Wright said. He'll get no argument from coach Tom Singer, who lightened up the practices this week in an effort to take the pressure off his team. "Now that the pressure of winning the district is off, I think the regional will be easier on them,"Singer said. "I think they'll be better prepared, mentally and physically. This is like a breadth of fresh air. I think now they feel they can go out and enjoy themselves in this regional." Alex Dingrando also tallied for the Norsemen, who led 1-0 at half. Blaine Fritz added two assists and Jason Sohasky one. "These kids deserved it, especially the seniors,"Singer said. "The seniors banded together and made up their minds that they were not going to let this game get away. This game was theirs." Cody Brown netted Northport's goal with one second left in the game. Joe Roman assisted. Northport finished 11-6-2. "We had our opportunities to make it closer, but we didn't capitalize," Wildcats coach Marshall Collins said. "If we could have capitalized, it might have put Suttons Bay back on its heels. "Suttons Bay is a very good team, very skilled," he added. "We knew we could hang with them. I just wish things could have turned out better for us. "Northport's a small community. You get attached to these students. I love and care about them. I don't like to see them go out like this." Matt Ness was in goal for the Norsemen.
