October 25, 2005Prep RoundupNorthport upends Leland in soccer districtsFROM STAFF REPORTSA 1-0 win by the skin of its teeth has almost become a playoff tradition for the Northport soccer team. The Wildcats downed Leland 1-0 in districts for the third year in a row, scoring with 3:56 left in the game as the ball went in off a Comets defender. Cody Brown was credited with the goal. "We beat them twice in the regular season," Leland coach Rob Boynton said. "I asked (Northport coach) Marshall (Collins) how many times they were gong to beat us on bad goals and he said 'Three.' " Said Collins: "It's always been something different. But that's soccer. One little thing can change the game -- one bad hop or odd bounce." The Comets finished the season with a 15-3-2 record, while Northport (10-5-2) will go on to host Glen Lake on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Leland won the two regular-season matchups, 2-0 and 3-2 in overtime. Drew Mitchell made 14 saves for the Wildcats, while the Comets' Tyler Kenney made nine. Boynton credited Mike Zaryzny and Victor Loredo with strong defense and Ben Schaub with a good game offensively. Suttons Bay plays Traverse City Christian in the other half of the draw on Wednesday, with the district final at the TBAYS complex at 4 p.m. Friday. MORE SOCCER Elk Rapids 7 Pine River 0 Ian Sliger scored four goals to propel Elk Rapids to a 7-0 district-opening win over Pine River. Josh Weidman, Andy Coates and Jordan Burry scored single goals, and Garrett Gribi had three assists. Brett Banwell, Ryan Agruda, Burry and Theo Stasch each had one assist. Dan Werth recorded the shutout in goals. The Elks (14-5-2) next face Bellaire. Forest Area 8 Charlevoix NW Acad. 0 Nate Snyder scored two goals to lead Forest Area to an 8-0 shutout win over Charlevoix Northwest Academy. The Warriors also received single goals from Max Galea, Jarrod Jones, Tyler Lane, Dan Karlskin, Zach Roys and Sam Runkel. Roys added two assists, and Brandon Rookus had an assist. Justin Cecil and Galez split time in goal, with Cecil making two stops. Forest Area (6-14) advances to host Fairview on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Buckley 7 Mason Co. Eastern 3 Justin Weaver and Jesse Shelton led Buckley to a 7-3 district victory over Mason County Eastern. Weaver scored three goals and added an assist and Shelton had a goal and an assist. Bears coach John Vermilya said Shelton made a big impact on the game. "He from the beginning of the game was putting a lot fo pressure on the opponent's net," Vermilya said. "He made the difference. He caused a lot of trouble for Mascon County Eastern." Jeff Jerrett added two goals and Matt Walters scored a goal. Zach Walters chipped in an assist. Scott Dixon made 15 saves in goal for the win, and David Dreves came in to play in net late, stopping a penalty kick. Buckley will next face Cadillac Heritage Christian on Wednesday in Big Rapids. Charlevoix 5 East Jordan 2 East Jordan finished its season Monday by losing to Charlevoix in the first round of district play, 5-2. Brandon La Count scored both East Jordan goals, while Jeff Keyser picked up the assist on the first goal. Goalkeeper David Waterson made 16 saves and fullbacks Peter Sladick and Michael Carter each made non-keeper saves. Charlevoix goalkeeper Shannon Gillespie picked up the win. The Red Devils finish their season with the best overall record in school history at 6-9-2. Bellaire 2 Benzie Central 1 Alex Scott scored eight minutes into overtime to send Bellaire into the next round of districts with a 2-1 win over Benzie Central. The Eagles scored first off a series of passes that led to a goal by Taylor Swartz. Hendrick Jendral assisted. The Huskies tied it up early in the second half, and at the end of regulation it was tied 1-1. Spencer Neuman assisted on Scott's winning goal. "This was one of our best games working together as a team," said Bellaire coach Lindsey DeFever, whose team improved to 11-7-1. "Teddy Maza kept us in the game with some spectacular saves." Maza had 10 saves in goal. Benzie Central outshot Bellaire 28-12. The Eagles play their second game of the district playoffs at home on Wednesday against Elk Rapids. BASKETBALL TC East frosh 53 Benzie Central frosh 25 Sarah Lang scored 17 points and also had 12 rebounds as the Traverse City East freshmen topped Benzie Central's freshmen, 53-25. The Trojans are 12-2.
