Leland captures district title

Comets upend TC Christian

LAKE LEELANAU - The last team to deny Leland a Class D girls basketball district title was TC Christian.
History did not repeat itself on Friday night.
Leland never trailed en route to a 44-20 victory over the Sabres for its fourth straight district title. The Comets (16-6) will play Ellsworth (16-6) on Monday in the regional at Boyne Falls.
"This one was scary because we won the conference," Leland senior Alisha Glass said. "Every other year we had something to prove. This year it was kind of ours to lose.
"They were tough. The last time we only beat them by three. We thought it was going to be a much closer game."
The game was close halfway through the third quarter.
But Leland - holding a 17-13 advantage - scored eight unanswered points and never saw its lead dip below double digits the rest of the way.
"We had some momentum coming in," said TC Christian coach Steve Morgan, whose team finished 13-9. "We had won our last five on the road and were 9-3 down the stretch. Our team's coming along. Tonight we just ran into a better team.
"I give Leland credit. From their coaching staff right down to their players, they're a classy team.
"We just couldn't match their strength inside. We stayed with it for a half, we just didn't hit the shots we normally hit."
Part of that was because the Comets were paying special attention to the junior backcourt of Kara Finney and Emily Morgan. Finney had three points, four rebounds and four steals while Morgan was held without a point.
"We beat them on the boards at times and they didn't hurt us on the boards," Leland coach Larry Glass said. "Their two guards didn't go crazy.
"If their guards didn't get many good looks and they didn't get many putbacks, we knew it was going to be tough for them to beat us. That's what we set out to do and that's what we did."
Alisha Glass led Leland with 18 points, 12 of which came in the second half.
"Alisha Glass, what can you say about her," Morgan said. "She's a class act and a great player. We look forward to seeing her play volleyball (at Penn State), but we won't miss her in basketball. But we do wish her well."
Leland also got 11 points from sophomore point guard Erin Sneed and strong play from seniors Ellen Cradduck and Sarah Allington along with junior Anna Lau.
"I thought Ellen Cradduck played a whale of a game," Larry Glass said. "She got a lot of rebounds and went a long distance to get a couple of them.
"Anna Lau and Sarah Allington just were very solid defensive players. They hit the boards hard and they've done that all year."
"We play better when we're all contributing," Alisha Glass added.
Junior Megan Ritsema led TC Christian - which doesn't have a senior - with nine points, five rebounds and two steals. Junior Abby Streeter added six points and four rebounds.
