Benzie upsets Mason County Central
Huskies overcome 11-point deficit

LUDINGTON - Benzie Central, down 11 after three quarters, rallied Monday night for a 58-55 upset win over Mason County Central in a Class B girls basketball district opener here.
Mason County Central beat Benzie by 11 earlier in the season.
"We're ecstatic," Benzie coach Mark Blazejewski said. "We get to play another day."
Emily Nugent's 19 points, 12 rebounds and three steals paced the Huskies (8-13). Jolene Jeske added 17 points and four assists; Maria Blazejewski 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists; and Samantha Kosiboski 10 points.
Benzie connected on 12 of 15 free throws.
"That was huge because we haven't been shooting well at the free throw line," Blazejewski said. "It was our night."
Benzie plays Manistee on Wednesday.
CLASS B at Petoskey
Petoskey 55
Kalkaska 49
Tori Premo scored 18 points and Kelsey Rosinski 16 as Petoskey rallied for a 55-49 win over Kalkaska in the Class B district at Petoskey.
Kalkaska (16-5) led 29-21 at half. Petoskey (7-14) fought back to tie the game at 36 after three quarters.
Petoskey outscored the Blazers 19-8 at the foul line.
"We just didn't play our game," Kalkaska coach Dave Dalton said. "I give credit to Petoskey."
Katie Krause had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Blazers. Kaitlyn Raymond added eight points and 14 rebounds and Tiffany Irwin seven points and seven assists.
Cheboygan 65
Elk Rapids 19
Cheboygan jumped out to a 48-8 halftime lead and coasted to a 65-19 victory over Elk Rapids in the first round of the Class C district tournament at Petoskey.
Three players scored in double figures for the Chiefs (20-1).
Elk Rapids (1-19) was led by Kacey Anderson's eight points and six rebounds.
CLASS C at Suttons Bay
Suttons Bay 50
Forest Area 25
Holly Orban led a balanced Suttons Bay attack as the Norsemen doubled up Forest Area.
Orban had 12 points and 12 rebounds, while four other Suttons Bay players - Krystal Dittrich, Kelsey Wick, Mary McCall and Maggie Walters - scored seven points. Walters also had 10 rebounds.
Kari Ingersoll led the Warriors (3-18) with eight points.
The Norse (7-14) will host Kingsley on Wednesday at 7:45, after the Glen Lake-Traverse City St. Francis matchup at 6 p.m.
At Mancelona
Boyne City 69
Harbor Springs 38
Boyne City was led by Holly Stanek and Trisha Tomkins in a 69-38 win over Harbor Springs to advance to the semifinals.
Stanek scored 22 points and Tomkins 16 for the Ramblers (12-9).
Ashley Quick's 17 points paced Harbor Springs (4-17).
Boyne City moves on to face East Jordan in the semis on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Mancelona. The finals are Friday at 7 p.m.
Charlevoix 69
Mancelona 24
Charlevoix, a state finalist a year ago, opened district play with a 69-24 win over Mancelona.
Stevie Murray scored 13 points and Bethany Pearson 10 as 12 different Rayders scored.
Katie DeRuiter led Mancelona (2-19) with eight points and 18 rebounds.
Charlevoix (18-3) plays Inland Lakes on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Mancelona. The finals are Friday at 7 p.m.
At Lake City
Pine River 47
Lake City 44
Hannah Koetje and Beth Nelson led Pine River to a spot in the district semfinals with a close 47-44 win over Lake City.
Koetje scored 14 points, while Nelson had 12.
Kelly Houghton paced the Trojans with 18 points and Amber Vanderstow had 12.
The Bucks face Mesick on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Lake City. The finals are Friday at 7 p.m.
McBain 75
Brethren 44
McBain advanced to the district semifinals with a 75-44 win over Brethren.
Elizabeth Hamlet scored 17 and Kara Nemeth 16 for the Ramblers.
Jordan Williams led Brethren with 18.
McBain will now play Manton on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Lake City. The finals are Friday at 7 p.m.
CLASS D at Hillman
Joburg-Lewiston 93
Atlanta 68
Terra Payne and Kassie Campbell paced high-scoring Johannesburg-Lewiston in a 93-68 win over Atlanta.
Payne notched 25 points, seven steals and five assists, while Campbell had 18 points and 10 boards.
Nikki Ormsbee chipped in with 11 points, Bridget Fisher had 10 points and nine rebounds and Ashlie House added seven steals and six assists.
Molly Moir led Atlanta with 17 points.
The Cardinals (14-7) will next face the winner of Wednesday's game between Posen and Hillman. The finals are set for Friday in Hillman.
At Ellsworth
Bellaire 50
Alba 30
Bellaire pulled away in the second half to advance to the district finals with a 50-30 win over Alba.
The Eagles led 14-13 at half before taking control.
Molly Poel scored 14 points and Logan Edgecomb 12 for Bellaire. Chelsey Blasko led Alba with nine points. Amanda LaPearl added eight.
Bellaire plays the Central Lake-Ellsworth winner on Thursday.
