Anonymous gift jump starts facility expansion

Most nonprofit agencies depend on the generosity of the community to continue the good work they do.
Good Samaritan Family Services in Ellsworth is no exception. However, Good Samaritan must have struck a chord in the heart of a very generous anonymous donor who gave $20,000 to its Moms & Tots Center in Ellsworth.
The center opened four years ago. It has operated from a cottage on Main Street in Ellsworth made available by the Ellsworth Christian Reformed Church. It provides a variety of free services for young women who think they might be pregnant, who are pregnant and who have babies and young children. Services include pregnancy tests, counseling, referrals, maternity and baby clothes, supplies, equipment and mentoring.
It has 200 clients from communities throughout Antrim and Charlevoix counties.
"We are grateful to this extremely generous person. The gift will jump start the center's needed facility expansion program," said Jerry Troyer, chair of Good Samaritan Family Services' Board of Directors. "It is an enormous encouragement for this fast-growing ministry for young women."
Good Samaritan is an independent Christian ministry supported by churches, businesses, individuals and foundations in Antrim and Charlevoix counties. In addition to the Moms & Tots Center, Good Samaritan also operates the Good Sam Pantry and Resale Shop in Ellsworth. For more information, call Bill Broadwick, 533-5552.

Friendly Garden Club Corresponding Secretary Sonja McGettrick of Cedar wrote on behalf of the members to say how much they appreciated the efforts of John Fraiser, city forester with the Traverse City Parks Department, and his crew for the lovely plantings throughout the city this summer.
"The perennial and annual flowers in the medians of the streets and (Grandview) Parkway have added greatly to our civic beautification," McGettrick wrote. "The choice of flowers at the Open Space and marina were special and complimented the 'Logo Garden' we planted."

The paint on the Alden Depot is no longer faded and peeling, wrote Priscilla Miller of Alden.
"Helena Township provided the funds. Jerry Alpers, his son, John, with help from the Alden Volunteers, spent days toiling away in the heat and humidity of this past summer," Miller wrote. "The building was scraped, deteriorating boards were replaced, primer (was applied) and then finally, the familiar blue/green paint was applied, Many thanks to everyone involved ... You did a great job!"
