November 3, 2005Ex-trustee wants Smith recalledSays supervisor is 'detrimental' to taxpayersTRAVERSE CITY - A former Elmwood Township trustee ousted by voters last year filed a petition to recall the township's supervisor.John Stanek filed a petition seeking the recall of Derith Smith on Tuesday with the Leelanau County clerk's office. The listed reasons allege Smith's actions as supervisor "have been detrimental to the taxpayers legally and financially" and claim she does not adhere to the job's statutory duties. Stanek's petition cites numerous specific examples, including "wrongfully terminating" two township marina employees, failing to submit required quarterly budget reports and "failing to nominate acceptable planning commissioners as required by state statute." Smith contended the allegations outlined in the petition are untrue. "My hope is that this doesn't interfere with township business," she said. "That is what I'm going to continue to focus on." Stanek wouldn't comment, other than to refer to the language listed on the petition. Stanek lost his trustee seat last year in the same election in which Smith ousted former supervisor Noel Flohe. The county election commission must approve the recall petition wording for clarity during a Nov. 14 hearing before circulators can gather signatures. County Clerk Michelle Crocker said signatures from 511 registered township voters would be necessary to force a recall election.
