November 3, 2005Court hearing on crash delayedOfficials seek data on collision that killed twoTRAVERSE CITY - A court hearing has been delayed for a Grand Traverse firefighter charged in a crash that killed a local woman and her infant son because officials continue to wait for collision data.Cory Carlton, 26, charged with two counts of misdemeanor negligent homicide, was scheduled to appear for a preliminary exam in 86th District Court Wednesday. Carlton was driving a Grand Traverse Fire Department truck March 8 when he allegedly sped through a stoplight in Garfield Township before striking a sport utility vehicle driven by Matthew Garrisi. Garrisi's wife, Rebecca, 28, and their 11-month-old son, Jesse, died as a result of injuries from the crash. Antrim County Prosecutor Charles Koop, who was appointed special prosecutor in the case, filed charges against Carlton in August. "We are still trying to get some data together as to the speed of the fire truck," Koop said Wednesday. "Because of the size of the truck, they are having difficulty determining the speed. Right now all we have is witness statements." Koop said the hearing will be rescheduled after Dec. 5. Grand Traverse County sheriff's investigators said Carlton did not appear to slow at the intersection to check for oncoming traffic, a requirement of the Michigan vehicle code of 1949. If convicted, Carlton could face up to two years in prison.
