On Thursdays, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Old Art Building in Leland is filled with laughter, music and the pitter-patter of tapping feet. Lisa Hawkins' tap dance class has lots of jokes, but no kidding around, the class is for adults.
Students range in age from over 30 to Colleen Varley, 16, whose mother joined and brought her along.
"It's so energizing," Marilee Milroy said.
For Pat Pollock, the class is "the best hour of our week."
"Making a fool of myself is what I do best," Lisa Conroy added. "I'm so good at it, that I thought I'd get some exercise while doing it."
Hawkins said she started teaching the class because people kept asking her to do it.
"I wanted something fun to offer people my age," she said. "Socializing is part of it. It's the smile in the week for all of us."
Classes are $8 per class or 8 classes for $50. Pre-registration is not required, but the schedule may change in the summer. For more information, call the Old Art Building at (231) 256-2131.
