June 28, 2005Unger hearing ends; trial decision loomsMan accused of killing estranged wife at resortBY JOHN FLESHERThe Associated Press BEULAH - More than a year after being charged with first-degree murder, a suburban Detroit man is about to learn whether he will stand trial in the death of his estranged wife at a northern Michigan resort. Attorneys delivered closing arguments Monday in a preliminary hearing for Mark Unger of Huntington Woods. Benzie County District Judge Brent Danielson said afterward he would issue a written ruling in a couple of weeks. If Danielson determines there is sufficient evidence of a crime and that Unger committed it, the case will go to circuit court. First-degree, or premeditated, murder is punishable by life in prison without parole. Unger, 44, has denied killing Florence Unger, whose body was found Oct. 25, 2003, floating at the shallow edge of Lower Herring Lake at Watervale Resort, about 40 miles southwest of Traverse City. Prosecutors contend Mark Unger pushed his 37-year-old wife from a boathouse roof to a concrete deck 12 feet below, then dragged her - alive but immobile - into the water, where she drowned.
