Detroit lands 2010 NCAA Frozen Four

Ford Field date will be event's first inside a dome

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit's Ford Field will host the 2010 NCAA Frozen Four men's ice hockey championships, marking the first time the event will be held in a dome, officials announced Thursday.
The Central Collegiate Hockey Association and the Detroit Metro Sports Commission will co-host the April 8-10, 2010, event at the home of the NFL's Detroit Lions.
Detroit has been the site of five previous Frozen Fours, most recently at Joe Louis Arena in 1990.
The event is one of several national sports showcases taking place at Detroit's downtown sports complexes during the next five years.
Ford Field also will host Super Bowl XL in 2006 and the NCAA men's basketball Final Four in 2009. Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers, hosts the MLB All-Star game next month.
Wayne Dean, chair of the Division I Men's Ice Hockey Committee, and Tom Jacobs, the NCAA's director of championships also announced Thursday the 2009 through 2012 Frozen Four sites as well as some regional competition sites for 2008 through 2011.
Washington, D.C., will host the 2009 event; St. Paul, Minn., will host in 2011; and Tampa, Fla., will host in 2012. The Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich., will be the site of the 2009 Midwest regional championships, co-hosted by the CCHA and Western Michigan University.
The Frozen Four will be in Milwaukee in 2006, St. Louis in 2007 and Denver in 2008.
