TRAVERSE CITY - Eric Gordon is following in his grandfather's footsteps.
The 5'11½, 217-pound Gordon verbally committed to play football at Michigan State on Tuesday night.
The Traverse City West senior had attended a camp at the school earlier in the day. The Spartans offered that night and Gordon quickly accepted.
"I've been a Michigan State fan ever since I was a little kid," Gordon said.
Gordon has a connection to the Spartan program. His grandfather, Don Dohoney, was a defensive end at Michigan State in the 1950s.
The 17-year-old, who plays linebacker and running back for the Titans, could play the bandit position in college. In Michigan State's scheme, the bandit is a cross between a linebacker and defensive back.
Michigan State has limited depth at linebacker and at bandit, which could give Gordon the opportunity to play early.
"(Linebackers coach Mike) Cox told me they only have six or seven linebackers on scholarship right now," he said.
Gordon is the second state player to commit to MSU this week. Birmingham Brother Rice tight end Charlie Gantt also announced his intention to be part of the 2006 recruiting class.
Gordon was a key player on a West team that went 10-1 last season. He led the team in tackles and rushed for more than 400 yards, averaging 10.4 yards a carry. He ran a 4.57 in the 40 at a Nike camp this spring.
Gordon had visited Indiana, Purdue, Notre Dame, Michigan, Maryland, Central Michigan and Missouri. He was scheduled to be at Penn State on Wednesday. Indiana, Central Michigan and Missouri also offered scholarships.
"Our entire staff is proud of Eric," Titans coach Matt Prisk said. "He's a great athlete who's taken it to the next level. We're happy he'll have the opportunity to play at Michigan State. He deserves it. He's going to a place he's always wanted to go to play college football."
With recruiting out of the way, Gordon can now focus his energies on the upcoming prep season.
"I'd like to get to Ford Field (for state finals)," he said. "That would be nice."
Gordon is ranked as the sixth best player in the state by rivals.com. St. Francis lineman Patrick Rigan is ranked fifth.
Recruits cannot officially sign binding letters-of-intent until February.
