June 16, 2005Moore hopes actors will visit festMovies will be named in coming weeksByRecord-Eagle staff writer TRAVERSE CITY - Sundance. Telluride. Traverse City? Organizers of the first Traverse City Film Festival - including founder and filmmaker Michael Moore - think the shore of Grand Traverse Bay is a natural spot for celebrating movies. "It's clear that this is an area that loves good movies," said Moore, who is throwing his movie muscle behind the four-day film festival. Details of the July 28-31 event - a showcase for movies that otherwise might not make it to rural Michigan - are slowly emerging. But organizers still don't have a list of films to be shown. Festival spokesman Gregg Smith said the lineup will be announced in the coming weeks. Wednesday, Moore and other members of the festival committee held a press conference to spell out what details are known. Moore said the festival wants to show films that aren't widely distributed but that are "just really good." He said the list will include movies made by well-known actors and directors and hopes to entice some of them to attend the showings. The majority of the films will be new films not yet released to the public, he said. The event will feature 30 screenings at the State Theatre, City Opera House and the Old Town Playhouse. Movies also will play nightly - for free admission - at the city's Open Space on the waterfront. Tickets to films showing at the indoor venues will cost $7 and will be available in July through the Interlochen Center for the Arts box office. The festival worked out a special one-time-use agreement with the State Theatre Group to use the Front Street movie house, which has been closed and under renovation. Rebecca Reynolds is a founder of Beyond the Bay, which brings international and American films to Suttons Bay, and said the festival is just one more way to bring good films here.
