June 12, 2005Bellaire wins regional titlePELLSTON - Bellaire won what is believed to be its first regional baseball title in school history Saturday with a 6-2 triumph over Rogers City in the Division 4 final here.The Eagles (32-7) had advanced with a 6-2 win over Gaylord St. Mary in their regional opener. "The kids are celebrating," Bellaire coach Gary Manville said shortly after the title-clinching win. "They earned it." Bellaire will play Holton in the quarterfinal in Traverse City on Tuesday. Ben Belanger pitched the first four innings and Zach LaPointe the final three in both games. "Our pitching was outstanding, but our defense in the Rogers City game was the best its been all year." Bellaire outfielders threw out two Rogers City runners at the plate. In addition, the Eagles turned two double plays. "Defense carried us,"Manville said. In the title game, Bellaire never trailed after scoring three runs in the first inning. Brad Mason paced the Eagles with two hits and two RBIs. Graham Garwood chipped in a double and RBI. Cody Wenzel belted a two-run first-inning homer for Rogers City. Mason had a single, double and two RBIs in the win over St. Mary. Brad Keiser added a single and RBI. Davison scores three in fourth to oust West Davison scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to edge Traverse City West 3-2 in a Division I regional baseball opener Saturday. The Titans (27-9-2) had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run double by Scott Purdy. The lead didn't last in the 93 degree heat, though. "We had back-to-back errors," West coach Randy Weber said. "The miscues cost us. We gave them five outs." Steve Powers suffered the loss. He allowed five hits and struck out three. Powers also had two of West's three hits. Saginaw Heritage beat Davison for the title, 4-1. Holton scores early, beats Mesick in final Holton scored four runs in the first inning en route to a 10-0 win over Mesick in the Division 4 regional championship game at Mesick. Derek Sundberg was the starter and winner for Holton (22-18). Holton advanced with an 11-0 win over Leland while Mesick downed Onekama 8-4. Bryan Beaman earned the win for the Bulldogs, who scored five runs in the first inning. Lacey hurls Bucks to regional crown Joe Lacey pitched a complete game as Roscommon beat Boyne City 6-4 to win the Division 3 baseball regional at Suttons Bay. Bob Hagle's two hits and two RBIs paced the Bucks. Roscommon advanced with a 7-1 win over Rudyard. Boyne City topped Manistee 11-4. SOFTBALL Mason County Eastern advances to quarterfinals Trailing 1-0, Mason County Eastern scored two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth Saturday en route to a 6-3 win over Manistee Catholic in the Division 4 regional final at Mesick. Mason County Eastern (26-7) beat Frankfort (28-7) 8-2 in the opening game. The Cardinals collected nine hits off Jenny Elliott. Adie McDaniel led the Panthers' six-hit attack with two hits. Elliott contributed a triple and Allison Webber a double. Ellsworth claims regional at Pellston Ellsworth defeated Hillman 5-3 to win the Division 4 regional at Pellston. The Lancers defeated Gaylord St. Mary 5-2 earlier in the day while Hillman edged Pellston 4-3. SOCCER Ludington edges Suttons Bay in regional shootout Ludington edged Suttons Bay 2-1 in a shootout Saturday to capture a Division 3 regional soccer final. Ludington will play in the semifinals Wednesday. The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the first half. But the Norse (18-7-1) tied it on a Holly Orban goal 12 minutes into the second half. Orban's goal came off a corner kick that a Ludington player headed out. Orban was there to convert on a left-footed shot. The game remained 1-1 through regulation and two 15-minute overtimes. In the shootout, Ludington converted on its first three shots while the Norse scored on one of four shots. Suttons Bay coach Mike Kelly said his team had opportunities in overtime. "We hit the crossbar with one shot and had four other point blank shots," he said. "We just couldn't finish." Kelly praised the play of Orban, Becky Houdek and Kate Kerr. TRACK Spagnuolo runs 1:55 split in track meet Traverse City Central's Tyler Spagnuolo ran the anchor leg for Michigan's 3200-meter relay team Saturday in the Midwest Meet of Champions at Ohio Wesleyan. Michigan finished second in a photo finish with Ohio. Both teams were timed in 7:40.6. Spagnuolo ran a 1:55 leg.
