June 9, 2005Suttons Bay wins Division 3 regionalAlfonseca's goal helps Norse break into finalFROM STAFF REPORTSBIG RAPIDS - The Fremont keeper did a good job getting to the ball before Suttons Bay could shoot. But she didn't get to Victoria Alfonseca once. Alfonseca scored halfway through the first half and it was the only goal the Norse needed in a 1-0 victory over Fremont in the Division 3 regional soccer semifinal on Wednesday. Becky Houdek assisted on the game-winning goal. Houdek sent a pass over the defense to Alfonseca on a breakaway. Alfonseca dribbled about 10 yards, drew the keeper out and fired it hard into the left corner of the net. With the victory, Suttons Bay (18-6-1) advances to Saturday's regional final against Ludington back in Big Rapids. The game is set for noon, but Suttons Bay coach Mike Kelly said it might be held earlier to avoid other school-related conflicts. Suttons Bay held a 4-3 shot advantage against Fremont and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. "We had numerous great opportunities," Kelly said. "But their goalie came out and grabbed everything before we could shoot it. We had the ball in the end 75 to 80 percent of the game." Charlotte Stowe had the shutout in net for the Norse. Among her three saves was a point-blank shot attempt from about 10 yards out in the closing minutes of the first half. "She had herself in perfect position," Kelly said. "They shot it right at her." Stowe's save was one of the few good scoring chances Fremont had in the regional. Kelly said the defense of Kelsey Wick, Megan Holtz, Kate Kerr and Holly Orban cooled off Fremont on a hot day in Big Rapids. "They played a great game," Kelly said. "So did our midfielders. They did a lot of running on offense and defense, keeping the ball out of our end."
