Manistee goes from worst to first at Division 3 districts

      TRAVERSE CITY -- Manistee came into districts with the worst record of the six teams in their district.
      But they're the only ones moving on.
      Shawn Sullivan's three-run double keyed Manistee's 8-6 win over Benzie Central in the Division 3 district baseball final at St. Francis.
      Sullivan's hit came in the fifth with the Chippewas (13-17) clinging to a 4-3 lead.
      Sullivan and Drew Czarnecki led Manistee with two hits apiece. Czarnecki scored three runs.
      Jermaine Shelton and Mike Flynn each had two hits for Benzie (16-19).
      Senior Shawn Sullivan picked up his first win of the season in a 6-3 win over Glen Lake, allowing just one earned run in seven innings and striking out five. He also notched a save in the championship game, coming in with one out, an 8-5 lead and the bases loaded. A groundout, walk and a flyout later, Manistee was looking forward to playing Boyne City in regionals.
      Chippewa coach Gus Kapolka was the junior varsity coach for Boyne City for five years, and this years' group of Ramblers seniors would have been on his final JV team.
      The Huskies advanced by beating Kingsley 5-1 as Jon Gottwald won his 11th game. Logan Schendel went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. He also scored twice. Flynn added two hits. Trey Anders had three hits and Dan Taylor two for Kingsley (23-12).
      Manistee beat Glen Lake 6-3. Ben Jacklin had two hits and RBI for the Lakers. James Czapek contributed an RBI double for the Lakers (13-24).
     
DIVISION 4
Mesick blanks Buckley to claim district title
      Bryan Beaman pitched a one-hitter, striking out 11, as Mesick beat Buckley 10-0 in the Division IV final at Mesick.
      Tom Nakhovanh led the Bulldogs (20-11) with three hits and two RBIs. Aaron Kearns also had three hits and drove in one run. Dave Brown and Brad Hall each contributed two RBIs.
      Mesick advanced with a 9-2 victory over Bear Lake by scoring six runs with two outs in the third inning.
      Kearns had the big bat, collecting three hits and driving in two. Levi Spencer chipped in two hits. Beaman pitched the first three innings, Hall the final four.
      Donald Omar had two hits for Bear Lake (14-15). Wes Scudder and Chris Dansby had RBI singles.
     
Leland turns unearned runs into district crown
      Leland closed out Frankfort and got a strong start against Lake Leelanau St. Mary's to win the Division 4 district at Frankfort.
      The Comets reached the title game with a 7-3 victory over Frankfort, scoring four unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning. In the final, Leland scored five unearned runs in the first en route to a 5-4 triumph over the Eagles.
      For Frankfort (22-13), losing pitcher Kyle Mick, Aaron Murray and Brandon Pritchard had two hits against Leland.
     
Fourth-ranked Bellaire rolls to championship
      Fourth-ranked Bellaire had no trouble in the district at Ellsworth.
      The Eagles (30-7) beat Boyne Falls 23-0 and the host Lancers 14-0.
      Brad Mason pitched a one-hitter, striking out seven, in the win over Boyne Falls. Ben Belanger, Zach LaPointe and Dustin Bicknell led the hitting attack with two doubles apiece.
      Belanger hurled a one-hitter in the title game. He struck out eight. Spencer Burke had the Lancers' only hit, a double.
      Belanger helped his own cause with a single and double.
      Ellsworth advanced to the final with a 6-5 win over Central Lake. Tyler Strange was the winner and also had two hits, while Pedro Oviedo and Jason Tessner had two hits each.
     
Onekama strikes late to beat Brethren, 10-7
      Onekama scored three runs in the top of the seventh to edge Brethren 10-7 in the district finals at Manistee Catholic.
      Matt Fredericks had a two-run single to key the uprising and make a winner of pitcher Dave Gillespie.
      Gillespie and Fredericks each had three hits. Gillespie drove in three runs. Lance Osborn and Tyler Miller added two hits for the Portagers (18-10).
      Onekama beat Manistee Catholic 12-9 to reach the title game. Brethren downed Freesoil 7-4.
