S.C. man arrested for hatchery fishing

FROM STAFF REPORTS

ODEN - It may be one of the surest places to land a brown trout in northern Michigan, but fishing at the Oden State Fish Hatchery's ponds has landed a South Carolina man in jail.
State police troopers stopped the man, whose name was not released, on a traffic violation after spotting his pickup truck exiting the hatchery off U.S. 31 at about 2 a.m. Wednesday, Petoskey state police post commander Lt. Aaron Sweeney said.
Troopers noticed blood on the man's leg during the traffic stop, as well as on a sweater in the bed of the man's pickup, Sweeney said. Underneath the sweater troopers found 17 brown trout fresh from the hatchery's ponds, he said.
Authorities said the man admitted to fishing at the hatchery and was taken to the Emmet County Jail pending charges for driving without a license and state game law violations, Sweeney said.
