Interlochen Public Radio's music station expands

Coverage area will reach the Straits region

TRAVERSE CITY - Interlochen Public Radio will expand its range to five additional northern Michigan counties this month.
The classical music station's coverage area soon will include Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, Mackinac and Otsego counties following the purchase of a Mackinaw City radio station, Interlochen officials said.
"It means that many more people can choose to listen to quality music on the radio, classical music on the radio, whenever they decide to," said Thom Paulson, vice president for media at Interlochen Center for the Arts. "We're delighted to present it to this community of people."
Interlochen officials did not reveal the purchase price. Paulson said he asked people in the area if they knew of a station that might be available for sale and came across 88.5 FM in Mackinaw City.
IPR developed a strategic plan with the help of Interlochen administrators, community members, listeners and radio station staff, Paulson said. The predominant focus to emerge from the effort was that the station expand its coverage area to include all of northwest Lower Michigan.
"Part of that was just to make us a stronger part of the local region," Interlochen spokesman Steve McBride said.
Coverage will extend as far north as the Straits area and eastern parts of the Upper Peninsula, Paulson said.
The station will be broadcast from Interlochen but will include more news updates from the added coverage areas, he said.
Work is currently being done to link the station in Interlochen to the transmitter, Paulson said.
"As soon as we get the word from the installation company that it's complete, we'll turn it on the air," he said.
