Conservatives offer alternate film festival

TRAVERSE CITY - A conservative group has organized a film festival to compete with filmmaker Michael Moore's Traverse City Film Festival.
American Film Renaissance of Dallas scheduled about a dozen free films for its Traverse Bay Freedom Film Festival July 29 and 30.
Moore called the event "laughable" and said it will increase publicity for the festival he founded.
"(Opponents) have always been the best publicity help for the things I do," Moore said.
Jim Hubbard, founder of the Dallas group that organizes festivals there and in Los Angeles and Little Rock, Ark., said Traverse City-area residents asked him to start it. He declined to name them.
"I don't think some local people share his world view," Hubbard said, adding the event will be "mainstream" and non-political.
"We're doing it for the same reason Michael Moore is doing it," he said, adding it is "to show classic films the public loves."
Genie Aldrich, listed as a co-founder, did not return phone messages requesting comment Wednesday.
The lineup includes "In the Face of Evil," a pro-Ronald Reagan documentary; "Echoes of Innocence" about a junior high school girl who is fascinated with Joan of Arc and hears voices; "Confronting Iraq," a pro-Iraq War documentary; and "Michael Moore Hates America."
Also on the roster are the Hollywood films "Top Gun," "On the Waterfront," "Charlotte's Web" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark."
