TRAVERSE CITY - A local businessman will pay to replace more than 100 bulletproof vests worn by officers with the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's office and the Traverse City Police.
Sheriff Scott Fewins said Butch Broad, owner of Elmer's Crane and Dozer Inc., offered to pick up the tab to replace vests recently listed for recall by Second Chance Body Armor.
The sheriff's office heard last week that 53 vests it owns contain Zylon, the material identified on a recall list issued last week by Central Lake's Second Chance.
"There was a need and he just wanted to help," said Broad's daughter, Tonya Wildfong. "You really can't hesitate in a situation like this. He said 'get them ordered and we will take care of it.' "
Fewins said new vests could cost up to $25,000 to replace.
Broad contacted the sheriff's office June 30 and later extended the offer to city police.
Chief Michael Warren said the city needs to replace approximately 65 vests that could cost $30,000.
"You can't do one without the other," said Wildfong. "They both protect us."
Both Fewins and city police Capt. Steve Morgan said their agencies are meeting with vendors to determine what vests will be purchased to refit officers.
"(Broad's gift) is really a great thing for us," said Fewins.
"It is a real compliment when somebody is willing to step up and support us. Maybe it happens across the country, but it definitely happens here."
