Judge Haley's hearing set for April

FROM STAFF REPORTS

TRAVERSE CITY - A court date has been set for a local judge over allegations he improperly accepted gifts from the bench and misled officials investigating the claim.
The hearing for judicial misconduct charges against 86th District Court Chief Judge Michael Haley is set for April 6 at 9 a.m. at the Antrim County Courthouse in Bellaire.
Haley was charged with misconduct in November by the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission for accepting football tickets in October of 2003 from attorney Richard Benedict, a former judge who was in court representing a client before Haley.
Haley also is accused of making misrepresentations to the tenure commission during its preliminary investigation.
The Michigan Supreme Court appointed Casper O. Grathwohl, a retired circuit court judge from Berrien County, to preside over the public hearing.
The commission then will review the matter and could make a recommendation to the Michigan Supreme Court regarding a possible sanction against Haley.
