Leland cruises in own tournament

      LELAND - Leland defeated Pellston 25-3, 25-20 to win the Leland Invitational on Wednesday.
      The Comets, who did not lose a game the entire day, led 11-3 in the finale with Pellston when Alicia Glass served 14 consecutive aces to end it.
      The Comets (11-1) also defeated Glen Lake (21-12, 21-17), Pentwater (21-8, 21-14), Charlevoix (21-10, 21-13), Kalkaska (21-13, 21-13) and Suttons Bay (25-11, 25-14).
      Glass finished with 49 kills, 35 aces, 11 blocks and 20 digs. Jennifer Hecht added 14 kills, 15 digs, 16 aces. Anna Lau contributed 14 kills, 7 blocks, 5 aces. Erica Breen chipped in 14 kills and 3 blocks while Whitney Grant had 3 kills, 78 assists and 4 aces and Daina Parent 4 kills, 5 assists, 7 digs and 3 aces.
      Pellston reached the finals by beating Northport (21-12, 21-15), St. Francis (21-7, 21-6), Benzie (21-11, 21-9), Suttons Bay (21-18, 21-13) and Glen Lake (25-14, 25-15). Pacing the Hornets (11-2-3): Amy Bachleda (4 aces, 11 kills, 1 block, 18 digs), Gabby Bachleda (4 aces, 24 kills, 3 blocks, 25 digs), Holly Burkhart (40 of 42 serving with 8 aces, 34 kills, 20 digs), Jill McNitt (91 assists, 6 aces, 7 kills), Amber Cowell (10 kills, 4 blocks) and Tara Friend (12 kills, 6 blocks).
      Suttons Bay downed Northport (21-15, 21-8), Benzie (21-9, 21-19), St. Francis (21-16, 20-22, 15-11) and then lost to Pellston and Leland. Leading the Norse: Holly Orban (8 blocks, 33 of 34 serving with 6 aces, 41 kills, 30 digs), Kelsey Wick (5 aces, 22 kills, 40 digs, 2 blocks), Anna Pryor (2 aces, 34 assists, 5 digs), Charlotte Stowe (40 of 42 serving with 6 aces, 3 assists, 8 kills, 22 digs, 8 blocks), Maggie Walters (11 kills, 12 blocks), Christa Neskey (18 of 19 serving with 2 aces, 31 assists, 12 digs) and Fran Belanger (2 aces, 9 assists, 8 kills, 8 digs).
      Glen Lake lost to Leland, beat Charlevoix (21-18, 22-20), lost to Kalkaska (18-21, 13-21), beat Pentwater (21-18, 16-21, 15-11) and lost to Pellston. Pacing the Lakers: Lindsay Dusen (26 assists, 24 digs, 13 kills), Jessica Odziana (12 kills, 35 digs), Sarah Zywicki (36 of 37 serving with 6 aces, 7 kills, 25 digs), Tara Novak (7 kills, 34 digs, 7 aces) and Chelsea Klumpp (7 aces, 10 kills and 33 digs).
      St. Francis went 1-3, losing to Benzie (16-21, 17-21), Pellston and Suttons Bay and beating Northport (21-7, 21-6). Topping the Gladiators were Kristina Droste (30 assists, 4 kills, 7 aces, 13 digs, 2 blocks), Jill Kuhlman (14 kills, 6 aces, 26 digs, 2 blocks) and Mariel Dryden (11 kills, 5 aces, 21 digs).
      Charlevoix finished 2-2. The Rayders beat Kalkaska (21-10, 14-21, 15-13), lost to Glen Lake and Leland and beat Pentwater (21-13, 19-21, 15-11).
      Pacing the Rayders were Zita Anderson (49 assists), Bethany Pearson (15 kills, 11 blocks), Emily Hessling (20 digs) and Ashlie Bradley (14 kills).
