Michigan talent teams up with the Times

Wolff is known for distinctive stippling style

TRAVERSE CITY - The New York Times' Christmas Eve outdoor section will have a definite Michigan flavor with a holiday column by Motor City Madman Ted Nugent and well-known Traverse City illustrator Glenn Wolff.
Wolff has illustrated the Christmas Eve outdoor column several times, but this is the first time he's doing it for one written by legendary rocker and hunting enthusiast Nugent.
"I've been doing it since the late '70s, when I lived in New York," said Wolff, a Traverse City native.
"I got an e-mail from them saying, 'How do you feel about Ted Nugent?'"
Wolff is a freelance illustrator whose art has brought to life posters, greeting cards, books and other media. He is known for elaborate borders and a distinctive stippling style, which refers to how he shades his drawings with dots and cross-hatches.
Without wanting to give away too much, Wolff said the Times piece is about Nugent sitting in a tree stand with a bow and arrow, waiting for the family's Christmas dinner to come by in a "spectacular Michigan swamp."
"It's pretty much an appreciative piece of nature and family," Wolff said.
Wolff said he's been working on a border that will incorporate a hunter and outdoor scenes, along with cozy indoor scenes.
"I'm trying to get his Gibson guitar in there by the fireplace," Wolff said.
While the story is not about rock 'n' roll, that helps identify Nugent, he said.
"It's a nice array of talent I've gotten to work for, and this is the first rock 'n' roller," he said.
