Leland falls in TC Central invite finals

Glass racks up 75 kills in tourney

TRAVERSE CITY -- Alisha Glass came up big, but Leland fell just short of winning Saturday's season-opening Traverse City Central Invitational volleyball tournament.
Glass, a 6-foot senior, racked up 75 kills on the day -- many of which had the crowd buzzing -- but the Comets lost to Fruitport in the championship match for the second year in a row.
The Trojans, the defending Class B state champions, were 25-23, 25-23 winners.
"We like coming up here," said Fruitport coach Dan Potts. "It's great from a team-building aspect. It's also nice to win."
Leland (4-1) held a 22-21 lead in the first game, but back-to-back kills by Jaclyn Geile put Fruit port in front and the Trojans never trailed again.
The Comets also held advantages of 9-5 and 16-14 in the second game, but late service errors gave Fruitport its 22nd, 23rd and 25th points.
"We're not in great physical shape yet," said Leland coach Laurie Glass. "We're in basketball shape, but it isn't the same. In volleyball you have to be able to jump and jump and jump and jump -- and put the serve over the net.
"When you get tired, serving is the first thing to go."
Potts gave Class D Leland credit, however.
"Really, they were only two sideouts away from a win," he said. "They're a good team, and I think we're a good team.
"The difference is, they really rely on a couple of people and we're a little more balanced. I think that helped at the end of the day."
In the championship match, Fruitport was led by Ashley Doremire (5 kills, 10 digs), Geile (6 kills, 4 digs), Danielle Brink (15 assists), Rachel Feutz (5 kills) and Autumn Williams (5 kills).
Leland, which hosts Harbor Light Christian Thursday, was paced by Glass, who in addition to her 75 kills also had 36 digs, 14 aces and seven blocks.
Also contributing to the win were Jennifer Hecht (24 kills, 24 digs, 7 aces), Whitney Grant (99 assists), Daina Parent (24 digs) and Ashley Erhardt (20 digs).
The Comets opened pool play with wins over Class B Ludington (25-20, 25-12), Class A Holland West Ottawa (25-21, 25-22) and Class B Petoskey (25-18, 25-12).
They advanced to the Gold Pool championship match with a 25-18, 25-16 win over host TC Central.
Central, seeing its first action under first-year head coach Kelly Larkin, opened with wins of 25-18, 25-14 over Glen Lake and 25-15, 25-18 over Rogers City before losing to Fruitport 25-20, 25-21 and Leland.
"I'm very optimistic," Larkin said. "Today gave us an opportunity to see what we need to work on and what we have to focus on.
"A lot of positives came out of today."
The Trojans (4-4), who travel to Alpena on Thursday, were paced by Barbara Burke (23 assists, 4 digs), Maddie Lagina (21 assists), Corie Larkin (22 kills, 7 digs), Victoria Klauer (15 blocks), Lydia Connors (7 digs), Caurey Ashton (7 kills, 7 blocks), Trish Mayo (7 kills, 7 blocks) and Brittany O'Neal (6 digs).
Glen Lake went 0-4 on the day, losing to Fruitport (25-12, 25-12), TC Central, Petoskey (25-12, 26-24) and Rogers City (25-16, 25-19).
Pacing the Lakers were Lindsey Dusen (4 kills, 14 assists, 7-for-8 serving), Jessica Odziana (7 kills, 20 digs, 6 aces), Calli Hurlin (10/11, 2 aces), and Sarah Zywicki (8 kills, 13 digs).
Glen Lake hosts Elk Rapids on Monday.
