Student appeals sanction

She was told to move to a new dorm

TRAVERSE CITY - One of two students sanctioned after a dorm resident found a racial slur on her door filed a second appeal to Northwestern Michigan College.
Kristen Hunter, 19, of Leslie appealed a decision that forced her to move to NMC's other residence hall.
Hunter's roommate, Elizabeth Feister, 19, of Cadillac, also was sanctioned but did not file a second appeal.
Hunter, when reached by phone, did not confirm that she had filed the papers. She has not returned subsequent phone messages.
The campus security director turned down the first appeals. Hunter's new appeal is to Chuck Shreve, dean of student services.
The two students were sanctioned for preventing the dorm "community from serving as a sanctuary" because of "disagreements" with the victim of the racial graffiti.
Shreve previously said college investigations "revealed a connection of some sort" to racist graffiti a black student found on her door.
Later, he said the disagreements with the student were unrelated to the graffiti and not racial in nature.
Krystel Jackson, 18, found the words "African Tribal Bitch" written on her door in permanent marker on Nov. 2.
The college said Brian Helmsley, a non-student, admitted writing the graffiti. The college banned him from both college dorms for more than a year.
Jackson asked that police pursue a criminal investigation.
