Shimek, U.S. golden

She adds 5 points, 5 boards in victory

FROM STAFF REPORTS

IZMIR, Turkey - Liz Shimek is golden.
Shimek, the former Glen Lake all-stater and Michigan's Miss Basketball in 2002, had 5 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals to help the USA Women's World University Games team defeat Serbia & Montenegro 79-53 in the championship game and claim the gold medal.
It was another dominating performance for the United States women, who went 7-0 in the tournament and outscored their opponents by an average of 43.4 points per game. The Americans shot 56.2 percent from the field to win the country's sixth gold and 13th overall medal in the World University Games.
Harvard head coach Kathy Delaney-Smith, who coached Team USA, said she knew the stakes were high.
"This is a talented team that was supposed to win the gold and that doesn't always go as planned," Delaney-Smith said. "This is a who's-who in division one college basketball. People were teasing me along the way, saying you better win or it's bad coaching."
Seimone Augustus (Louisiana State) led the way against Serbia & Montenegro with 18 points and 8 steals. Lisa Willis (UCLA) added 13 points, including 10 in the first half, and Sylvia Fowles (LSU) chipped in with 12 to go along with 7 rebounds.
Fowles ended as the USA's top scorer in the Games, scoring at 15.0 ppg. clip, followed by college teammate Augustus with a 14.2 ppg. average. Shimek, who will be a senior at Michigan State, averaged 7.0 points and 6.9 rebounds.
