IZMIR, Turkey - Glen Lake High School grad Liz Shimek is going for the gold.
The USA Women's World University Games team went on a 20-0 second-quarter run to beat Russia 118-67 on Wednesday to reach the gold-medal game.
Shimek, a senior at Michigan State University, had six points and seven rebounds against Russia. Shimek also had a team-high five steals in the semifinal victory.
The U.S. team, which can take no worse than a silver medal, plays Serbia & Montenegro for the title on Friday. Serbia & Montenegro defeated Australia 70-57 in the other semifinal in Izmir, Turkey.
Louisiana State University teammates Sylvia Fowles and Seimone Augustus led the Americans in the win over Russia with 25 and 18 points, respectively, including a combined 30 points in the first half.
"If I was scouting us and saw that combo, I don't know what I would do," said U.S. head coach Kathy Delaney-Smith on the USA Basketball Web site, referring to Augustus and Fowles. "They're both phenomenal players. They're truly amongst the finest, if not the best players in the country. They're both so unselfish and team oriented, which makes them all that much more refreshing and in fact, better."
Augustus also dished out all of her team-high five assists in the first 20 minutes.
One of those assists led to a jumper by Shimek with 6:30 left in the first half to ignite the 20-0 run by Team USA.
In its six victories, Team USA has scored 100.8 points per game, outscoring the opposition by an average of 46.3 points per game.
The Americans have also held an average margin of 26.9 on the boards.
