LAKE ANN - A memorial fund has been set up for the family of a Benzie County Sheriff's deputy who died in an off-duty motorcycle accident.
Cory Lee Gunther, 27, was killed early Tuesday when the motorcycle he was driving southbound on Reynolds Road in Inland Township struck a passenger car turning off Fewins Road.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police post in Traverse City are still investigating the crash. Officials said Tuesday it appeared a 2002 Buick Century driven by a 20-year-old woman pulled into the path of Gunther's motorcycle.
Gunther worked with the Frankfort City Police before joining the sheriff's department, where he had been a deputy for four years.
Gunther graduated from Benzie Central High in 1996 and attended Northwestern Michigan College, where he earned an associate degree in law enforcement.
Gunther also worked as a volunteer with the Frankfort Fire Department for five years.
Visitations will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and again from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Benzie Central High school auditorium.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Cory Gunther Memorial Fund, Honor State Bank, P.O. Box 67, Honor, Mich., 49640.
