August 10, 2005Clinch Park Zoo train catches fireMinor injuries reportedByRecord-Eagle staff writer TRAVERSE CITY - A miniature train at the Clinch Park Zoo caught fire after it ran over a fuel hose lying across the train tracks. A handful of riders suffered minor burns and scrapes Tuesday when the Spirit of Traverse City hit a fuel hose, which squirted a "fine mist of diesel fuel" onto the train's hot engine, sparking flames, said Lauren Vaughn, the city's parks and recreation director. "A huge thing of black diesel flames came out over the engine and into the first couple seats," said Don May, who was seated at the back of the train. The train's engineer suffered a minor burn. Vaughn said one woman was transported to the hospital after she injured her leg while trying to escape the train. A few other slightly injured people sought their own medical treatment, he said. The accident occurred when the train hit a diesel fuel hose stretched over the tracks. The hose was pumping fuel into a storage tank. Fuel is usually delivered in the morning, and Vaughn said he was unsure why the Schmuckal Oil Co. truck came in the afternoon. The train was not damaged, but the zoo stopped offering rides. The train should be running again today, Vaughn said.
