Man enters sex plea

Jarvis still faces charges in other counties

TRAVERSE CITY - A Manton man admitted he tried to kidnap a former foster child to have sexual contact with her in Grand Traverse County.
Dennis Jarvis, 34, pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct - a 15-year felony - and felony child enticement in 13th Circuit Court.
In exchange, Grand Traverse County prosecutors will dismiss one count of kidnapping and five other counts of third-degree CSC when Jarvis is sentenced.
Attorney Gerald Chefalo said the original kidnapping charge was the "driving force" behind Jarvis' acceptance of the plea deal.
"(Jarvis) accepted the plea (in Grand Traverse) because we felt the child enticement charge was something he had admitted he had done," he said. "He had gotten a call from the former foster child and she had told him she was running away and needed help and she was going to kill herself.
"He felt that if he violated her trust, if he told anyone about this, she would run away and hurt herself and he made the decision to help her," he said.
Jarvis was arrested March 31 after Benzie County authorities received a tip about a possible abduction attempt of the 13-year-old girl in Lake Ann.
Police said Jarvis was spotted picking up the teen in his vehicle by a police surveillance team at the scene before allegedly taking her to a wooded area, where he was arrested.
Prosecutor Anthony Cicchelli charged Jarvis with kidnapping and soliciting and contributing to the delinquency of a minor in March, but Chefalo said the charges there were dismissed "without prejudice."
Cicchelli filed a motion in May to dismiss the Benzie charges, arguing Jarvis was already facing "multiple felonies" in both Grand Traverse and Wexford counties, and was a resident of the latter.
Jarvis is still facing nine counts of criminal sexual conduct in Wexford County for alleged incidents with the girl between March and August 2004.
Arraigned in April, Jarvis' bond in Wexford was set at $200,000.
"I do have hopes there will be something worked out in this case," said Chefalo of the Wexford charges. "We look forward to continued discussions with Wexford County."
