TRAVERSE CITY - Job prospects are slowly improving in northern Michigan, according to March employment figures from the state.
The unemployment rate for the 10-county northwest Michigan area fell by six-tenths of a percentage point last month, improving to 8.7 percent over the 9.3 percent jobless rate posted in February.
The number of unemployed workers in the region fell by almost 900 last month, the state Department of Labor and Economic Growth reported.
State labor analysts say the area's unemployment figures should continue to improve.
Statewide, jobless rates decreased in all 17 of the state's major labor markets last month. Among the largest job gains was in northeast Lower Michigan, including Otsego, Crawford and Cheboygan counties, where the jobless rate fell by .7 percent to 11.2 percent - but remains the highest in the state.
Cheboygan continued to have the third-highest county unemployment rate in Michigan at 15.3 percent. Leelanau remains the area's lowest county at 6.5 percent, down from 7 percent in February.
