April 26, 2005Residents get three chances to clean upOne day devoted to electronicsByRecord-Eagle staff writer LELAND - Leelanau County residents can clear out their basements, yards and closets by participating in three upcoming cleanup projects. A countywide junk cleanup will begin May 1, with Hillcrest Automotive and B&B Salvage offering tow-away service at a special cost for junk cars, appliances and scrap metal in Leelanau County. For junk cars, contact Hillcrest Automotive at 946-5016. For cars and other miscellaneous junk, contact B&B Salvage at 946-7019 or 228-6070. The service will run through Sept. 17. On May 21, county residents can bring computers, printers, televisions and other old electronic devices to an electronics recycling collection in Suttons Bay from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. These items, which contain hazardous materials like lead and mercury, will be processed for recycling and reuse. The cost is $10 per household. On June 25, a household hazardous waste collection will be held in Suttons Bay from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Household hazardous waste like oil paint, cleaners, batteries and fluorescent light tubes will be disposed of properly or recycled when possible. The cost is $5 per household plus $2 per can of oil paint or varnish. Residents must make an appointment to participate in the electronics and household hazardous waste collections.
