April 21, 2005Leelanau prosecutor to take caseByRecord-Eagle staff writer TRAVERSE CITY - A special prosecutor will decide whether a Grand Traverse Metro firefighter will face criminal charges in the traffic deaths of a local woman and her son. Leelanau County prosecutor Joseph Hubbell will review the Garfield Township crash that killed Rebecca Garrisi, 28, and her 11-month-old son, Jesse. They died in the March 8 accident after their vehicle was hit by a Grand Traverse Metro fire truck. Part-time firefighter Cory Carlton was driving the truck to a fire when he went through a red light at Zimmerman and Silver Lake roads and struck a vehicle driven by Garrisi's husband, Matthew. "I had some notice in advance," Hubbell said of the assignment. "I have agreed to do it. That is a common practice when there might be a conflict." Grand Traverse sheriff's investigators said Carlton, who was placed on indefinite suspension, did not appear to slow at the intersection to check for oncoming traffic. Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Alan Schneider this month asked the Michigan attorney general's office to determine whether the case should be reassigned to avoid any conflicts of interest. Hubbell would not say how long his review might take. "I think once the order is signed and the paperwork is in order, the file will be transferred to our office to start the investigation," he said.
