April 20, 2005Court to decide soon if it will take caseMHSAA expects to know by MayLANSING (AP) - The Michigan High School Athletic Association could know within a few weeks whether it will be forced to change next year's prep sports seasons. The U.S. Supreme Court will begin the process of deciding whether to hear the MHSAA's appeal in the case with an April 29 conference, the MHSAA said Tuesday. The MHSAA expects to know on or around May 2 whether the court will accept the case. The upcoming decision could settle a lengthy legal battle over Michigan's prep sports seasons. The case was filed in 1998 by the mothers of Grand Rapids-area female athletes. Lower federal courts have said the current MHSAA schedules discriminate against girls because it forces them to more often play in less advantageous seasons compared to boys. The biggest change would flip girls' basketball and volleyball seasons to make them conform with the schedules played at high schools in other states and at colleges nationwide. Michigan girls now play basketball in the fall and volleyball in the winter. Golf, tennis and soccer seasons also would be juggled for both boys and girls.
