April 8, 2005East Lansing police to review riot practicesTear gas used to break up crowdsEAST LANSING (AP) - The eight law enforcement agencies involved in policing last weekend's post-Final Four disturbance will meet April 18 to review their practices. Some students and community members have complained about the use of tear gas to break up large crowds during the disturbance, which resulted in 43 arrests after the Michigan State men's basketball team lost to North Carolina in St. Louis. East Lansing police have said the use of tear gas was justified. Police chief Louis Muhn, in a statement released Thursday on the city's Web site, said he supports the formation of an independent commission to review a comprehensive police report requested by East Lansing's city council. "The events of that night have raised concern in the community," Muhn said in the statement. "I want to be certain there is an independent review of our findings that meets the community's expectations for thoroughness and candor." Leaders of two Michigan State student groups on Thursday called for an independent investigation into the incident to ensure against bias. "We want to get to the bottom of what happened," said Kevin Newman, a Michigan State senior and president-elect of the university's Residence Halls Association. "We believe it was excessive force."
