BUCKLEY: New school chief is ready

By
Record-Eagle staff writer

BUCKLEY - A former administrator at Northwestern Michigan College and area Catholic schools is the new head of Buckley Community Schools.
Chet Janik starts Sept. 13, but he said he has been visiting the district almost daily to meet teachers and other staff.
Janik comes from Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools, where he was executive director of development. Previously he worked in various administrative positions at Northwestern Michigan College for 21 years.
"I think we made a good selection; we're just glad to welcome him to the community," said Elmer Guernsey, school board secretary.
Guernsey said Janik's biggest challenge likely will be the school district's budget.
"We're dealing with the cuts in the state and we ended up having to buy three new buses this year that weren't planned on, because of the shape of our old buses," Guernsey said.
Janik's salary was not available because he has not yet signed a contract. Janik said he is in the final stages of negotiations and a contract should be signed soon. His predecessor made $73,500 annually.
Janik was selected from 22 applicants, eventually whittled down to two - Janik and Buckley Schools principal Steve Prissel.
Janik is taking over for Lynn Gullekson, who became Kingsley Area Schools superintendent this school year.
