PREP SOCCER: Eagles soaring

FROM STAFF REPORTS
PETOSKEY - One jumped out to an early lead and won going away.
The other fell behind and had to rally in the final minutes to win.
Nevertheless, Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy and Cadillac Heritage Christian ended up exactly where they wanted to be - in the Division 4 regional soccer finals on Saturday.
Burt Lake NMCA cruised to a 4-0 victory over Northport in Tuesday's regional opener as Nathan Chatfield and Mike Baker scored two goals apiece.
"We played a solid game - possibly our best of the season," said Eagles coach John Spears, whose team improved to 19-3. "From our sweepers to our strikers, we were solid."
Baker also had two assists, while Chatfield and Tyler Vuke contributed one each.
Winning goalie Matt Weir had five saves. He received solid defensive support from Lee Chatfield, Chris Redrup and Alan Vertican.
"They played strong defense," said Northport coach Marshall Collins. "They have some quick players and it's hard to keep up with them. They're a tough team.
"And Chatfield's just a great player."
Nathan Chatfield's two goals increased his career total to 165 - four behind the 169 that state leader Ryan Brenneman of Watervliet Grace Christian scored between 1992-95. Chatfield has tallied 55 times this fall.
Collins praised the effort of the Wildcats (16-4-1), particularly seniors Jimmy Stannard, Curtis Kolarik and Joey Thomas.
"We played hard," he said. "The score doesn't indicate how hard we played."
Cadillac Heritage trailed Big Bay de Noc 3-0 eight minutes into the second half before the Patriots came alive.
Brandon Herlein scored twice, including the game-tying goal with four minutes remaining in regulation.
Josh Herlein also scored during regulation.
Caleb Sekete netted the game-winning goal with five minutes left in the second overtime.
"We came out very flat and very sluggish in the first half, and we were still playing that way early in the second half," said Heritage Christian coach Tim Herlein. "We finally kicked in. We kept fighting and never gave up."
Winning goalie Matt Schut had 11 saves.
Cadillac Heritage Christian and Burt Lake NMCA will square off for the regional title on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
