October 3, 2004TC diving leads way for swim victory in seven-team tourneyFROM STAFF REPORTSTraverse City swept the relays and placed five divers in the top seven Saturday en route to winning the seven-team Falcon Invitational at Ogemaw Heights. Traverse City finished with 438.5 points. Mount Pleasant was second with 347.5 and Gaylord third with 209. "To win by 100 points - and Mount Pleasant and Gaylord have strong teams - is a big deal," Traverse City coach Toby Tisdale said. "Our depth is what did it." Overall, Traverse City won five events, including three relays. Individually, Jordan Newhouse captured the 200 IM (2:31.57) while Robyn DeYoung won the diving competition (189.15). In the relays, Kristen Vermetten , Keeli DePoister, Meg Wickstrom and Carina Dittman claimed the 200 medley (2:05.38); Newhouse, Dittman, DePoister and Elyse Schultz took the 200 freestyle (1:52.11); and Newhouse, Vermetten, Ellen Mang and Schultz won the 400 freestyle (4:13.34). Taking seconds were Schultz in the 100 freestyle (59.66), Vermetten in the 500 freestyle (5:48.73) and 100 backstroke (1:10.77) and Kyla Krygier in diving (187.30). Finishing third were Schultz in the 200 freestyle (2:10.06), DePoister in the 200 IM (2:36.32) and 100 breaststroke (1:19.97) and Wickstrom in the 100 butterfly (1:10.33). SOCCER TC West 3 Saginaw Heritage 1 Traverse City West tuned up for its showdown with Traverse City Central by posting a 3-1 win over Saginaw Heritage on Saturday. "It was good to get out of the conference and get a big win," West coach Jason Carmien said. West led 1-0 at half on a Kevin Bartosek goal. Brian Schmuker assisted. Ben Stowe and Schmuker added second-half goals. Stowe assisted on Schmuker's goal. Saginaw Heritage scored on a penalty kick midway through the second half. Jeromy Stanley had four saves in goal for the Titans (11-2-1). Zach Borovik and Ben Kreple were credited with strong games by Carmien. The West JV Green team improved to 8-0-3 with a 4-1 win. Will Conklin netted two goals and Sam Coughenour and Josh White one goal. Jon Nowak was in goal. The freshmen battled Heritage to a 0-0 tie. West faces Central on Tuesday. TC Central 0-2 at Midland Dow Invitational Traverse City Central dropped a pair of games at the Midland Dow Invitational. The Trojans (3-10) dropped a 6-0 decision to eventual tourney champs Ann Arbor Huron before a 3-1 loss to Flushing. Greg Argyle scores Central's goal, with an assist from Lance Dillon. The Central JV Black went 1-1 in the tourney, losing 4-0 to Huron before a 5-0 win over Flushing in the consolation game. Matt Grove scored three goals, with Zach Schwartz and David Harmon adding a goal each. Jeff Byl had the shutout in goal. Muskegon Christian 2 Elk Rapids 1 Muskegon Christian scored two second half goals to edge Elk Rapids 2-1 in a match between perennial soccer powers Saturday. Jeff Guntzviller scored for the Elks (15-2) in the first half. Northport 1 Harbor Light 0 Jimmy Stannard scored with 8:11 left in the first half as Northport celebrated Homecoming with a 1-0 win over Harbor Light. Joe Roman assisted on the goal. Drew Mitchell posted the shutout in goal for the Wildcats (10-2), who travel to Leland on Monday. BASKETBALL Benzie Central 46 GR Forest Hills East 30 Kiera Brown paced Benzie Central with 15 points and 11 rebounds as the Huskies posted a 46-30 win over Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern. Emily Nugent added 11 points and nine boards, and Jolene Jeske had nine points. Benzie (2-7) held a slim 12-9 lead after one quarterof play, but used a 13-4 outburst in the second stanza to take control of the game. MP Sacred Heart 53 Buckley 41 Second-ranked Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart built a 12 point halftime lead en route to a 53-41 non-conference win over Buckley. The Bears (6-6) played Sacred Heart even in the second half. Darcey Matthews led Buckley with 17 points and six rebounds. Jenny Burkett added 11 points, six rebounds and three assists. TENNIS TC Central B team wins its own invitational Much of the A team had a day off, but spent it at the courts anyway, cheering the Traverse City Central varsity B team to a win in the Northwest Michigan Invitational. The Trojans scored 22 points, 10 in front of runner-up Traverse City St. Francis. Port Huron Northern was third with nine points, followed by the TC Central junior varsity with four. The B team won all four doubles flights and two singles flights, with St. Francis claiming the other two singles titles. The Gladiators received flight wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles from Madie Klumpp and Kristen Marsh in the round-robin tournament. Emily Lelandais (TC B) was No. 1 singles runner-up, with Central JV's Paida Matibiri second at No. 2. Leslie Wright and Cora Bye won the third and fourth flights for Central B, with St. Francis' Lauren Heimburger second at No. 3. Central's B team dominated the doubles flights, getting wins from Lindsey Archambo/Annelise Christensen at No. 1, Sarah Malone/Ali Gribi at No. 2, Heidi Pangborn/Molly Mann at No. 3 and Emily Stevens/Morgan Pulcipher at No. 4. Kayla Casciano/Lydia Wiley were runners-up at No. 2 doubles.
