No. 1 Comets roll into 'D' semifinals

STANDISH - The Comets are shooting down to Kalamazoo - again.
Leland, ranked No. 1 in the Class D volleyball rankings, advanced to the state semifinals for the fifth time in seven years on Tuesday evening with a 15-5, 15-3 quarterfinal victory over Oakland Christian.
The Comets, who improved to 59-12 and set a school record for wins, will take on Battle Creek St. Philip (48-21-5) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at University Arena in Kalamazoo.
"One thing we didn't do last year was set a goal to reach the semifinals. We were so young I just didn't want to put that kind of pressure on them," said Leland coach Laurie Glass, whose team lost in the regionals in 2003. "But this year, from day one we set a goal of going to Kalamazoo."
Alisha Glass paced the Comets with 13 kills, eight digs and four aces, while Emily Bouckaert had 19 assists, three blocks and two aces and Lisa Nedow added three kills, seven digs and three blocks.
Also contributing were Holly Hottinger (5 kills, 2 blocks) and Cyndi Erhardt (2 kills, 3 digs).
"We served very well and caused (Oakland Christian) some problems on their side of the net," Laurie Glass said. "And once we got them down, we didn't let them up."
