Letters to the Editor

Trustworthy leadership

Candidate for Peninsula Township Treasurer, Jay Ruzak, will bring an evaluative, professional approach to our board. With 30 years of management experience, along with a mastr of business administration degree in finance, his proven leadership skills will provide the direction that our township's future needs.
Jay's trustworthy character along with a strong work ethic and commitment to our community will result in the fair-minded decisions required in our local government.

      Proven leadership

It is important for voters to consider the qualifications and overall integrity of the candidates running for public office with as much importance as that usually given to any issues of the campaign.
Candidate for Peninsula Township Treasurer, Jay Ruzak, possesses uniquely strong qualifications with a master of business administration degree in finance.
Additionally, his fair-minded decision making, proven leadership characteristics and an honest willingness to listen to his constituents' opinions will bring a refreshing perspective to the board.

      Accountability is key

Having known Rex Hite for over 20 years, I believe he would be an excellent choice for Peninsula Township Clerk.
What he would bring to the position is accountability and commitment to be open to scrutiny on all matters of interest to Peninsula Township residents.
On controversial issues, such as the current financial fiasco of under-funded lifetime benefits for township employees and trustees, I believe Rex would show leadership in not only resolving the problem, but in preventing errors like this from occurring in the future.
Cast your vote for Rex Hite for Peninsula Township Clerk on Aug. 3.

      Integrity must return

When the registered voters go to the polls on Aug. 3, just remember the Elmwood Township Board members are to represent the residents, not themselves, personally. Then some integrity may return.

      Prudent use of funds

John Ockert has saved the citizens of Mayfield Township thousands of dollars since he has been in office.
He has not accepted any pay raises offered by the township, any mileage or any extra pay for attending extra meetings. He carefully watches every township expenditure.
He welcomes input by citizens at township meetings. Everyone has an opportunity to speak. Under his leadership the township is a democracy. Everyone has a voice and everyone is heard.
If you want to save tax dollars and have your voice heard, vote for John Ockert for supervisor for Mayfield Township.

      For long-term needs

Six of seven Leelanau commissioners and four of five Suttons Bay board members favor moving all county facilities to the central, accessible, safer, less expensive, expandable Suttons Bay Township site.
All facilities at one site provides greater convenience for Leelanau citizens. Placing all facilities in Suttons Bay Township will provide state-of-the-art facilities to serve the county's short- and long-term needs for at least 50 years.
We will not have taxes raised if we build this facility as planned. Let's get this project behind us. Support your elected officials, vote yes. Move all county facilities to Suttons Bay Township.

      The perfect candidate

I would like to encourage readers to vote for Barbara Lemcool for Garfield Township clerk, because she is passionate about our area and because she has the experience, integrity and skills required for the job.
Her extensive administration of volunteers throughout our region as director of the volunteer center makes her uniquely qualified to be a public servant and her work ethic makes her the perfect candidate for the clerk's office. Please vote for Barbara Lemcool on Aug. 3.

      A positive approach

I want to give my support in the coming election to Dorothy Dunville, who is running for clerk in Acme Township. Dorothy will bring a fresh, positive approach to decisions that are crucial to the township. She has experience with the public and has been involved in the community. She has lived in Acme for over 30 years. Dorothy will restore responsibility to the clerk's job.

      An honest candidate

Dorothy Dunville is a good friend and neighbor. She is a mother of six. She has worked with the public for over 40 years. She has lived in the Acme area for approximately 30 years.
She is honest and a hard-working person. She is a member of the Acme Township Resident's Association, helping to preserve the public's access to Grand Traverse Bay. She has organized several fund-raisers for people in need in our community.
In my opinion she would make a fine Acme Township clerk.

      By, for, of the people

As the former town manager of Suttons Bay Village (1999 to 2003), I have known Derith Smith as clerk of the village.
Derith is smart, articulate and thorough. She is well-versed on growth issues. She is "current" on state and federal compliance details, and has a firm grasp on budgetary issues. Derith is an unswerving advocate for the unbiased application of the rules. She is professional, competent and extraordinarily suited to representative government.
Derith Smith is by, for and of the people. If I could vote in Elmwood, I'd cast my vote for excellence: Derith Smith for Elmwood Township supervisor.

      Personal dedication

Each vote for the next county drain commissioner, Kevin McElyea, will be our collective commitment to the preservation and skillful management of our natural resources.
Kevin's long-standing personal dedication, and highly respected professional expertise, will positively impact the decisions made today, and ensure the safekeeping of our uniquely beautiful environment for generations to come.

You can count on her to be fair, enthusiastic and willing to listen to all sides of any challenge that comes her way. She has the experience that growing Garfield Township needs. I urge you to get out and vote in the primary on Aug. 3.

      Proven leadership

Qualifications count! This should matter the most when considering the candidates.
Upon reviewing the actual qualifications of all the candidates for the position of Leelanau County sheriff, it is apparent there is one standout! Only Sheriff Mike Oltersdorf has the experience, education and training to be the leader of an agency with 50 employees and a $3 million budget.
Mike has proven his convictions, leadership and actions have always been in the best interest of Leelanau County.
We strongly urge you to vote for proven leadership qualities by re-electing Sheriff Mike Oltersdorf as our Leelanau County sheriff on August 3.
