Northmen win annual Harbor/Petoskey meet

FROM STAFF REPORTS

HARBOR SPRINGS - Eric Behan and the Petoskey boys picked up right where they left off last winter.
Behan, a Class A all-stater and captain of the Record-Eagle all-region ski team as a sophomore, opened the 2003 downhill ski season by sweeping the slalom and giant slalom as the Northmen edged Glen Lake 78-85 to win the annual Harbor/Petoskey Invitational on Tuesday at Boyne Highlands.
"I think Eric's actually stepped it up a notch," said Petoskey coach Brewster McVicker, whose team finished second in the state last year. "He's worked hard and made great adjustments, and they've paid off for him."
Behan won the slalom with a two-run combined time of 47.51 seconds, nearly four seconds ahead of second-place Conor Pelton of Manistee (51.21).
Behan edged Glen Lake's Kevin Fisher 1:01.1 to 1:02.58 in the GS.
In addition to Behan's performance, the Northmen received top-25 performances from Nick Tahtinen (third giant slalom, 14th slalom), Eric Shaw (seventh GS), Mike Antonishen (10th GS), L.B. McVicker (12th GS, 25th slalom) and Jamin Fochtman (16th GS, 17th slalom).
Petoskey B-teamer Sean Felz was 14th in giant slalom and 24th in slalom, while teammate Ben McMurray tied for 19th in the slalom.
"We finished third in slalom and had a couple of DNFs (did not finish)," McVicker said, "so we still have some work to do there."
Glen Lake, which is now a co-op team with Suttons Bay, had a solid day with several top-10 finishes.
"It was a good day," said Lakers coach Mark Fisher. "We have a few guys who could've done better, but some other teams had trouble today, so we're happy.
"It would have been nice to knock off Petoskey, but that's a big task for anybody because they're so deep," he said. "We're pleased to be right there."
Top finishers for Glen Lake were junior Kevin Fisher, who in addition to taking second in GS also placed 11th in slalom; junior Alex Wiesen, who was fourth in GS and ninth in slalom; senior Terry McGovern, who placed third in slalom and 13th in GS; and senior Matt Klein, who finished 20th in GS.
Traverse City Central finished third in the 11-school meet with 146 points, followed by Gaylord (191), Boyne City (194), Petoskey B (225.5), Charlevoix/East Jordan (237), Harbor Springs (255), Manistee (258), TC West (305), TC St. Francis/TC Christian (344), Harbor Springs B (356) and Inland Lakes (408).
Adam Valentino paced the Trojans by finishing eighth in slalom and ninth in giant slalom.
Teammate Mike Pickering placed sixth in slalom, while Gunnar Miller was 13th in slalom.
"Considering all the factors - including (the temperature being) minus 6,000 degrees - we did pretty well," said Central boys coach Ben Ferris. "We see what we have to do now, and I think we'll be competitive."
Individual top-10 finishers included Manistee's Pelton (second in slalom, fifth in GS), Boyne's Matt Mercier (fourth in slalom), Harbor Springs' Jeff Hofacker (fifth in slalom), Gaylord's Matt Thompson (sixth in GS, 10th in slalom) and TC West's Andrew Winters (eighth in GS).
