Canadian trash triples estimates at Waters landfill

11,000 cubic yards expected; 34,370 arrives

GRAYLING - Shipments of Canadian trash to Waste Management's landfill in northern Crawford County far surpassed estimates in 2003, alarmed county officials reported.
The volume of trash from north of the border soared in the last three months of 2003, after the landfill accepted 12,270 cubic yards of Canadian trash during the first nine months of the year.
There were 22,100 cubic yards of Canadian waste dumped at the City Environmental Services landfill near Waters from October through December, including 9,300 cubic yards in December. The trash is coming from the Sudbury area in Ontario.
"It's a source of concern because of the lack of local controls over it," said Bruce Patrick, environmental monitor for Crawford County. "(County commissioners) are worried, but their hands are tied."
The 34,000-plus cubic yards of Canadian garbage shipped into Crawford County is more than three times what was projected last spring by Waste Management officials, when they anticipated around 11,000 cubic yards a year coming in from Canada.
Waste Management officials said higher tipping fees being charged at a landfill near Sudbury caused the increase, but the Waters landfill isn't expected to be a long-term destination for Canadian trash.
"This is strictly economics," said Eric Van Houten, division manager for Waste Management. "I would think that within a couple of months the Waters landfill will have seen its last load of Canadian trash."
