December 16, 2004Gaylord hosts loaded hockey tourneyFive of top 10 D3 teams in fieldByRecord-Eagle staff writer GAYLORD - Ten of Michigan's outstanding Division III high school ice hockey programs will gather in Gaylord Friday and Saturday for the inaugural Division III Challenge. Included in the field are 5 teams that finished in the state's top 10 D-III rankings in 2003-04, and two of last season's Division III final four (Gaylord and Flint Powers). The remainder of the field includes Big Rapids, Cadillac, Cheboygan, Chelsea, East Grand Rapids, Grosse Ile, Harper Woods Notre Dame and Riverview. Five of those 10 teams are also currently in the D-III top 10 in the first coaches' association poll released this week. Riverview is No. 3, East Grand Rapids No. 6, Grosse Ile No. 7, Gaylord No. 8 and Flint Powers No. 9. "I think it will be very competitive," Gaylord coach Bill Touroo said. "It should be a lot of fun." The format will feature games between schools in the northern/western part of Michigan versus teams from southern Michigan, with each team playing once on Friday and once Saturday. Gaylord didn't draw Flint Powers, the team it defeated 5-4 in the state semifinals last year. Touroo said he hopes the tournament at the Otsego County Sportsplex becomes an annual event. "I think it will stay intact," he said. "The thing that opened the doors for this was getting to the state finals. Now there's a lot of interest in playing us, so we've been able to beef up our schedule." The pairings for the weekend are as follows:
Friday, December 17:
Saturday, December 18:
All games will be played at the Otsego County Sportsplex.
