Norsmen, Elks advance in district soccer

      Suttons Bay and Elk Rapids will collide Wednesday in a second-round Division III district soccer match at Suttons Bay.
      The two conference champions advanced Monday with shutout victories.
      Suttons Bay, champs of the Cherryland Conference, defeated Benzie Central 4-0 while Elk Rapids, winners of the Lake Michigan Conference, handled Houghton Lake 7-0.
      Randy Mucherino scored with four minutes left in the first half to give Suttons Bay the momentum it needed against Benzie.
      The Norsemen added three second half goals to put the game away. Jabe Dalzell, Matt Ness and Dave Stowe scored the goals. Mike Morrison assisted on Suttons Bay's first three goals. Stowe's goal, which came from about 45 yards out, was unassisted.
      The Norsemen (12-4-3) outshot the Huskies 29-1. Matt Klein posted his 10th shutout in goal.
      Meanwhile, Elk Rapids (14-5), outshot Houghton Lake 34-3 in its win.
      Joel Wenger, Jeff Guntzviller and and Josh Weidman all netted two goals for the Elks. Kyle Burry chipped in a solo goal.
      Seth Woolcott was in goal for Elk Rapids, which beat Suttons Bay earlier in the season.

      Marcus Matthews and Mickey Lloyd scored two goals apiece Monday as Buckley defeated McBain Northern Michigan Christian 4-0 in a Division IV district soccer match.
      Matthews also assisted on two goals and Lloyd one for the Bears (15-5-1). Nathan Malik also drew an assist.
      Josh Stanley was in goal for the Bears, who play at Forest Area on Wednesday. The two teams split a pair of matches during the season.
     
      Glen Lake 10 LS 0
      Glen Lake won its first district soccer match in the program's three-year history Monday, beating Leelanau School 10-0.
      Cal Springsteen scored five goals and assisted on three to key the Lakers' Division IV triumph. Brad Tondreau added two goals and Steve Richardson, Joe Korson and Ben Jackson one for the Lakers. Jeff Clark also had three assists.

      Fairview, Crossroads win
      Fairview edged Boyne Falls 104-105 to win the coaches Class D boys state championship race Saturday at Mount Pleasant.
      Central Lake's Stephan Shay was the overall winner in 15:57.4. He was followed by Gaylord St. Mary's Ben Tarbutton at 16:41.1.
      Buckley's Josh Edingfield and Takis Pifer were fifth and sixth (17:34.4 and 17:37.4). Ellsworth's Pedro Oviedo took seventh (17:55.5) and Boyne Falls' Adam Raphael eighth (17:58.8).
      Big Rapids Crossroads Academy won the girls' race with 26 points. Crossroads' Rebecca Monroe was the individual winner in 20:01.3.
